Handel’s Messiah Performed by the San Francisco Symphony

At a time of year when nearly every merchant is pushing their wares on the American public in the grand spectacle of Christmas, it’s difficult to find an oasis of sanity - a place where the meaning of the holiday hasn’t been shoved aside in favor of bell ringing Santas, rehashed Muzak versions of tired carols, and grouchy, harried shoppers all trying to rush through their days.
But such an oasis can be found in the music of the San Francisco Symphony’s version of Handel’s Messiah, performed this year at the Flint Center on the campus of DeAnza College in Cupertino, California, about an hour south of San Francisco. Once we entered the hall, we felt the world of craziness drift away.
Previous performances of Messiah that I’ve heard have been high volume events with sopranos in the rafters and choruses blowing out the back doors. I was pleased to see that conductor Christopher Seaman had chosen a more reverent and controlled version of this widely interpreted piece.
Handel wrote Messiah during the years of 1741-45, and performed it first to an indifferent London reception. The piece was revived, however, in 1749, and Handel continued to revise the piece significantly throughout the rest of his life. He lengthened, shortened, and removed many sections, and rewrote portions to match the voices of the local singers. After Handel’s death in 1759, many composers have rewritten the score to suit the tastes of the time; some of the most famous revisions are Mozart’s (1789) and Ebenezer Proust’s (1902).
In the last 35 years, symphonies have been making attempts to return to Handel’s spirit for the piece, though not always to the letter - or “note,” as it were. Music writer Michael Steinberg says that “Two approaches to performing Messiah are available. You can reconstruct one of the forms in which it was actually given by Handel between 1742 and 1759 (or, for that matter, the 1741 score), or you can treat the score with its variants as a soft of kit from which to build an edition of your own. Like most modern conductors and editors, Mr. Seaman takes the latter, synthetic approach.”
Seaman is a magician, able to take 200 voices, several dozen strings, and four powerful soloists and make the setting feel like an intimate private concert, even like chamber music in some movements. By controlling the pace and volume precisely, he leads the listener through every delicate step, never forcing the music on the audience, but rather presenting it as a gift.
Each of the soloists seemed personally moved by the music, no one more so that soprano Danielle De Niese. The Australian-born singer captured the stage visually in a stunning lime green ball gown that set off her green eyes, but what shone most was her deep love of the music. Although the soloists play prominent roles in the performance, no one sings for any length of time or very many movements. By the end Ms. deNiese seemed to be enjoying the music so thoroughly that it seemed that she’d rather sing in the chorus next time around, just to get to participate more.

Everywhere I turn, I’m being asked to weigh in on the issue of whether copy should be long or short in a sales letter. I receive countless newsletters on copywriting and marketing, and they are all still debating the issue.
I doubt that the question will be answered definitively, but after hearing from other Internet copywriters and after considering the issue myself, I’ve learned that if you follow three guidelines, the issue of length will become almost irrelevant.
Guideline #1) TELL PROSPECTS WHAT THEY WANT AND NEED TO KNOW TO MAKE A BUYING DECISION.
Interested prospects will read even a sales letter of several pages long if they are interested and if your sales letter has good content. Many of us are more interested in telling prospects what WE want them to know. But we should all be telling prospects what THEY want and need to know.
Guideline #2) OMIT NEEDLESS WORDS.
This guideline is actually Rule #17 from Strunk & White’s famous little book on writing, _The_Elements_of_Style_. (If you write, you really should read this small but influential book.)
Anything that doesn’t have a direct purpose or work toward winning over your prospect should be cut out. I don’t care how much you want to tell them about what a great reputation your company has and how successful you were last year. Unless that information takes the reader one step closer to buying (admittedly, sometimes it does), cut it.
Do the research and know your target audience. Then, write with their needs in mind. Write everything your prospects want and need to read, but write ONLY what they want and need to read. Cut the rest.
Guideline #3) TEST. TEST. TEST.
This is the best indicator of how long your sales letter should be. If you don’t like to test, you have to rely on luck. Not a good idea. Put together the best sales letter you can with everything a prospect needs to know to make a buying decision, cut out anything that’s not essential reading for your prospect, then run it. Record the results. Rewrite a portion of the letter. Test again. Record the results. Keep doing this until conversion rates improve and you’ll know how long your sales letter needs to be. Of course, this kind of testing is much easier online than in offline direct mail, but it needs to be done. (Offline direct mail will probably require a split mailing.)
Although many people will tell you that “research has shown longer sales letters pull better,” the only research you should be paying attention to is your own. Long sales letters don’t pull well for everyone.
There’s an easy way to answer to the question of how long or short a sales letter should be. (It’s the same for other similar questions of tone, diction, and how much text you should emphasize.) Determine the needs and desires of your readers and you’ll have your answer.

Brochures are a great form of advertisement and a great way of
selling products and services. They have been proven effective
for promoting products and steering customers toward purchasing
a particular product or availing of a particular service. Let’s
say you own a hotel in a highly urban area with competitors in
just about every corner of the city. Since competition is stiff
you have to think of ways to advertise your hotel in a way that
will make it stand out among your competitors. Of course, you
can do it by giving discounts, special offers or offering free
breakfast to visitors.
But some hotel owners especially small hotels think that they do
not need to advertise as it will cost them thousands of dollars
just to print a few copies of brochures. This should not be the
case. Hotels should be advertised as hotels sell something to
the public. They are public necessities and every day there are
a lot of travelers looking for such service. And good
advertising will show where this service can be availed. Aside
from good service and affordable prices, one of the best ways to
increase patronage is through promotional materials. A good
brochure can tell a lot about the hotel. It can effectively tell
the story about the good accommodation and moderate prices to a
lot of people likely to avail of them.
If you are a winter resort hotel then organizing and printing
your brochures at the beginning of the season can ensure that
they reach your prospects in time for the winter holidays.
Creating an advertising material for a hotel is easy. You can
include the location, accessibility, service, management, rates,
scenery and other details in pleasing and colorful promotional
materials. But most hotel owners are concerned about the price
of printing these materials. But the introduction of the
Internet offered a lot of options to business owners today.
There are thousands of printing companies online that can print
your materials quickly and in low prices. Since most regular
printing companies are looking for longer runs, they generally
do not take up smaller print jobs because there is no profit in
using larger machines to run small quantities. But most online
shops accepts smaller print jobs so when you need only a few
copies of brochures you can explore your opportunities with
these virtual shops.
Thus, if you want to seriously increase your profits, then it is
time you seriously think of increasing your guests. Set up
brochures that can effectively market your services. And do
careful planning and research to avail of printing services at
affordable prices.

Away from the bustle of the Beltway and the imposing monuments of American history rests a part of Virginia where things happen more slowly, and for the better. Here the beautiful birds indigenous to northern Virginia flutter and frolic without a care in the world; the pilated Woodpeckers beat a rhythmic tattoo in search of food, the goldfinches dance in the air, and the majestic eagle soars over land settled by the early fathers. Northern Virginia is a birdwatcher’s paradise, literally and figuratively.
For a relaxing vacation in the great outdoors, nothing beats a serene morning of nature at play. In the Stafford area of northern Virginia, there are a number of spots away from the usual tourist traps where one can enjoy the show of beautiful summer plumage and birdsong.
Aquia Landing
A public beach in Northern Virginia? True, this area might not have the beachy feel of towns on the southern shore, but Aquia Landing offers visitors a peaceful atmosphere and ample opportunity for birdwatching.
Abel Reservoir
There’s more than fish biting at this popular picnic spot. If the idea of sitting in a boat for hours in this fully-stocked lake holds no appeal, take a hike along the many trails bordering the water. Abel Reservoir is one of the most beautiful, natural spots in the county, home to many flying friends.
Washington’s Ferry Farm
The former home of a great founding father has hosted nearly 100 known species of birds! So popular is this area that the farm hosts regular birding tours. This informative morning will teach you everything you want to know about the mating and living habits of these creatures.
Chatham
Stroll through the gardens of this famous Virginia manse and you might spy a few finches among the flowers. The beauty of Chatham mansion is enhanced daily by the many species of birds that flutter among the grounds.
From public beachs to living museums, northern Virginia provides a home to many species of birds. Grab your binoculars and zoom lens camera and be ready, because you never know what to expect when you go birding in Virginia.

In a nutshell… YES!
I’ve given a lot of thought recently to the power of ‘resolutions’ - to that basic human instinct that continually drives us to improve ourselves and to expand our horizons.
Perhaps you’re reading this now and resolving to finally conquer your anxiety?
The trouble with resolutions, however, is sticking to them! All too often, within weeks, they’ve fallen by the wayside. Why is that? Why do we all struggle so much to maintain our resolve?
To my mind, ‘resolve’ and ‘resolution’ are in themselves anxiety-inducing words! What do I mean…? Well, just consider the word RESOLVE. It resounds with a sense of determination… demanding immense effort. It also calls upon you to SOLVE something… to remedy a problem… to seek out that elusive ‘Holy Grail’ alone.
And don’t we ALL have some aspect of our life that needs a ’solution’? EVERY SINGLE ONE OF US! It comes with living life to the full! RESOLUTIONS require us to take a long hard look at our lives. They demand we show an honest recognition of the need for change… and often this can be the hardest part of any new resolution.
Little wonder, then, that resolutions fill us with trepidation! Suddenly, we have to face up to a PROBLEM or a CHALLENGE. Then we have to decide on a course of action for CHANGE. Then we have to find the SOLUTION. And through it all, we have to maintain our RESOLVE.
Pretty daunting! Especially for those of us with personal experience of the debilitating affects of anxiety.
So let me try to make it a little bit easier for you!
Just be kind to yourself. Give yourself a break and understand that you can’t solve everything… and certainly not at once. You have to take that pressure off yourself. Don’t take too much on and try to implement lots of changes… this would be scary even to non-anxiety sufferers!
Oh, and don’t worry about all the ‘detail’ - the weight loss… the job application process… the dating game… the college course… the house move. Don’t be side-tracked by them… And certainly don’t beat yourself up if these changes don’t happen all at once! Remember, it’s early days!
I remember when I was anxious and I felt that every aspect of my life was wrong. I just wanted to change everything at once… to be a totally different person living a totally different life. But it felt like I was asking for the impossible, I felt beaten before I’d even begun to make a single change. There was just too much to deal with at once.
Well, I found that the simple SOLUTION is to make just ONE RESOLUTION. And when you live with anxiety, there is only ONE RESOLUTION you should be making - only ONE RESOLUTION which will magic away all the ‘detail’, which will bring about all the ‘changes’ you want in your life. And that ONE RESOLUTION is…
I AM GOING TO BE ANXIETY FREE TODAY… AND FOR THE REST OF MY LIFE
I know what you’re thinking…. That’s easy for you to say! Well, YES it is! But, what have you got to lose?
ABSOLUTELY NOTHING - except your anxiety!
The rest of your life is all there for the taking… but as with all resolutions, you have to be prepared to make that choice for change, that RESOLUTION, to face up to and resolve the anxiety.

In the 1960s, it’s safe to say that in in the sixties everything changed: society, fashion, music, art, media, everything was impacted. It was a time when everyone truly believed they could make a difference, when it seemed as if the world had limitless possibilities and a few people trying really hard, willing to sacrifice everything, could change the direction of everything.
And it proved the power of believing in yourself. Ordinary people did change things, extraordinary things like the attitude of society at large, like the way people viewed war and music and art. Student protests, often led by folk musicians, helped lead to the demise of the Vietnamese War, helped make social consciousness and equality for all a living fact, helped people really achieve the freedom that America and the West have always striven for. It was a remarkable time, and no wonder that many people look back to it as a time of dreams and passion.
Social Activism, Celebrities, and Music
Rock music became its own genre in the mid-1950s. Less than ten years later, the Beatles burst onto the music scene, the vanguard of a revolution in music. Parents hated them, sometimes even worse than they hated Elvis. But the kids loved them, and would buy anything with a picture of John, Paul, Ringo, or George. Their innovations paved the way for later artists, both British and American: the Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix, Bob Dylan, The Doors, The Mamas and the Papas - dozens of legendary bands have the Beatles to thank.
By the middle of the decade, the Beatles were writing songs about social issues, like war and loneliness. And other bands followed suit. There was a lot to write about; in the United States, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was leading American Blacks to unheard-of levels of social equality, and soon the British would put special military troops in Northern Ireland to quell the unrest there, leading to nearly-open guerilla warfare with the IRA. Women all over the world were following a movement to equal rights. And anti-war activists like Jane Fonda were making a name for themselves, both famous and infamous.
Food: Trends Good And Bad
Though founded much longer ago, McDonalds and other fast food restaurants grew into a major power in the food industry during the 60s, probably driven by the high energy of the time coupled with an increasing dependence on automobiles as a means of transportation. At the same time the stuff that’s bad for you became popular, other people began to realize that you really are what you eat. Because of new age conservationist movements, those people began to eat healthier: whole grains, organic foods they grew themselves, and semi-vegetarianism, vegetarianism, and vegan lifestyles.
War: What Is It Good For?
You can’t talk about the sixties, the decade of peace, without talking about war. Particularly, you have to look at the Vietnamese war. The US entered the country in Southeast Asia in the early 1960s at the request of the French - who subsequently abandoned the war. And America’s presence in Vietnam grew, gradually forcing a draft of the very young men who were just discovering the dizzying freedom the sixties ushered in. The result? An impressive increase in the numbers of young people going to college, and an equally impressive increase in the number of young men moving to Canada.
Ref: http://www.sixties.gb.com
But why was this war so different from Korea, only about ten years earlier? The simple answer: television. Reporters with cameras covered the bloodiest parts of the war, capturing the pain on both sides in film. And those films made their way to broadcast television, which for the first time could be found in half or more American homes. It was difficult to watch the images of war without being moved, and it was a real shock to teenagers and young adults who had never known the touch of violence before.
But there was another kind of war going on, a social war. Blacks in America were discovering their power, partly spurred by the thought of the draft and partly by the energy of the decade carrying them forward. Women throughout the world were discovering not only their political power, but the social freedom brought about by a little pill - the birth control pill. For better or worse, relations between the sexes would never be the same.
Sixties Fun, Games, and Fashion
Toys were undergoing change, too. Physical games, like Frisbees and Twister, became very popular indeed. Boys began collecting Matchbox cars, the latest rage; and the self-image of little girls everywhere was changed as Barbie dolls, Sindy dolls, and other anatomically correct dolls that weren’t baby dolls entered their pink frilly rooms.
Older boys were finding they had much more to look at than ever before. Girls’ skirts moved from the near-ankle-length full skirts of the fifties to the short - shorter - shortest skirts of the sixties. Short skirts and midriff-revealing hipster jeans also made it important that as little cellulite as possible showed - girls could no longer wear industrial-strength girdles. The most effective way of getting rid of cellulite? Be as thin as possible. The other problem with changing clothes was that if you used garters (or suspenders, if you’re in Britain) they showed under the short tight skirts. The answer? Pantyhose, an invention of the devil.
Inventions and Innovations
Computers also moved from being a scientific curiosity to a genuine industrial innovation; punch cards and tape were the programming tools of the time - until the integrated circuit, the precursor to today’s microchips. This innovation led to the development of the hand-held pocket calculator by Texas Instruments, though calculators did not come into general use until the early seventies. But the world didn’t understand how much science and technology was really going to change their lives - until Neil Armstrong spoke to the world from the surface of the Moon in 1969. It was a fitting end to a remarkable decade.

One say’s “I bought “XYZ Company” at Rs.2200 and immediately after I bought the stock price dropped to Rs.2000.” I feel sad. Another comes with a different version “I sold “XYZ Company” at Rs.2000 and it went up to Rs.2400 same evening” I made an imaginary loss of Rs.400 per share.
Solution:
You can buy more shares @ Rs.2000 and reduce your overall buying cost. This has to be done only if believe in the fundamentals, management and the future prospects of the company.
To do this you need to keep money ready.whatever money you have and want to invest, split it into two parts. Then keep 50% cash aside, only invest with other 50%.So if need to buy more of any stock when the price falls you have ready cash.
Also now if you have 200 shares of XYZ Company 100@Rs.2200 and 100@Rs.2000.Then the price goes up to Rs.2400. Sell only 100 of the shares. Then if the price further shot up, you have some shares to sell And participate in the rally to make money.
Next You sold the share and the price went up. The solutoion to this is never sell all the shares at one time.Sell only 50% of your shares. So if he price goes up later you still have the other 50% to sell and make profit.
The golden Rule is to first do your own analysis of the stock before investing and buy on tips. Also invest only in companies which declare dividends every year. To be sure that you are not investing in loss making companies.
