Fountain Pen History

Arts & Crafts

The urge to write and draw can be dated back to the early ages of human civilization. Caves discovered by archeologists are proof of the attempts of the primitive men to draw and write. From engraving on stone plates and cave walls to writing on palm leaves and hieroglyph inscriptions, mankind has been trying to preserve its thoughts using various implements: sharp stones, reeds, metals and quills.

The invention of ink and paper changed the mode of writing by scratching. Quills were dipped in a reservoir of ink and used for writing. Holding a thin quill didn’t suit to writing for long hours. It struck the early inventors that the hollow channel in a bird’s feather can store ink for writing. The fountain pen in its raw form was born.

The first mention of fountain pen can be traced to the Egyptians. Hassan El Basha Mamoud an Egyptian scholar translated a manuscript from Fatimid dynasty dating to 969 AD, which talks about using a pen without an inkpot. A pen was made of gold and presented before the caliph. It had its own ink reservoir. But the pen leaked, and hence a better one was ordered. The same pen with modifications was presented. This time, there was no ink spill when the pen was tilted to all sides. The pen wrote fluidly on contact with paper, and ink disappeared as soon as the pen was lifted from the surface of paper to the amazement of the onlookers. Except for the writing on the manuscript, there was no other evidence that such a writing implement was ever used.

The earliest fountain pen was designed by M. Bion, a Frenchman, in 1702. There were many producers of fountain pens in the early 1800s. John Scheffer, a Britishman, mass-produced fountain pens that were half quill and half metal. The ink was stored in sheep’s gut. But all such early attempts at holding ink in hard rubber tubes with a metal nib at the bottom were messy.

“Necessity is the mother of invention,” and it’s wonderful how path breaking inventions are made. Lewis Waterman, the inventor of the fountain pen used widely, determined to do something after a valuable contract document was destroyed by spilling ink from the pen he usedan insurance salesman turned into an inventor. Waterman patented the fountain pen in 1884, and started mass-producing it. The fountain pen in its true form was born.

Going Beyond A Simple Model Railway Layout

Arts & Crafts

At their most basic level, model railroad layouts are simple circles and ovals that
would fit onto a 4×6 sheet of plywood.

These simple track layouts are easy to set up and relatively inexpensive, but they
aren’t really very realistic. After all, with the exception of kids’ rides at the
amusement park, how many trains have you ever seen that just go around in circles?

The Point-to-Point Layout

Real railroads go from one place to another place. They may have sidings, branch
lines, and other subsidiary systems, but the main line starts at one point, travels to
another point, and stops.

Trains are turned around at terminals by means of extensive yards, wyes, loops, and
turntables, but the main line, whether double-track or single-track, goes from point
to point. There are switches and yards at one end, and a turnaround of some sort at
the other.

Despite the point-to-point model railroad’s resemblance to real railroad lines, it
is’nt very successful on a model railroad.

True, in some very large model systems the point-to-point plan has been used, but
in most cases the model railroad cannot possibly approximate the distance traveled
by a real railroad.

If you had the entire Madison Square Garden for your layout, you still wouldn’t be
able to duplicate, in scale mileage, a reasonable point-to-point railroad. In normal
model railroads, the train hardly leaves one terminal before it has arrived at the end
of the line.

No time is allowed for switching operations at the terminals for freight trains to
perform their normal functions, while the express is speeding from terminal to
terminal.

In a good-sized layout, scenery can handle part of this problem. The express can
rush into a tunnel, where the operator stops it. He then carries on other railroad
business to his heart’s content and, when it is completed, makes his express rush
out of the other end of the tunnel as if it had been traveling hundreds of miles all
the time.

A small layout, however, cannot adopt even this illusion because a small railway has
no room for two genuine terminals.

The Out-and-Home Layout

The out-and-home layout solves part of this problem - it has only one terminal.
This is really a point-to-point system doubled back on itself.

You have a terminal. You send the train out and it travels through farmland and
forest, through villages and mountains, and finally arrives at a terminal. It just
happens to be the same terminal it started from, but you can easily pretend that it
isn’t.

This system gives you a little more mileage between terminals than the point-to-
point system, but in most model railroads the train arrives back home before you
have been able to do much, unless you use the tunnel or other method of hiding the
train that is supposed to be traveling.

While more adaptable to model railroads than point-to-point, it still presents many
problems except on very large layouts.

Both point-to-point and out-and-home layouts can be combined with continuous
pikes, in large layouts, to offer variety and realismand this is precisely the
procedure used by experienced model railroaders with plenty of space.

For the vast majority, however, the continuous layout is not only best but also
essential for interesting and varied train movements. With a clever use of buildings
and scenery it can also create the many little deceptions that bring a realistic flavor
to the operation of your railroad.

Beginners Acrylic Painting - What Palette and Brushes to Buy?

Arts & Crafts

Starting a new hobby can be a bit daunting, don’t you think? There’s everything to buy and no previous knowledge about what to get. You go into a store and the range is huge.

“I’m just beginning with acrylic paints and I only want to buy a paint brush!”

Well, when you’re beginning with acrylic paints there are a few things you need to know before you get as far as the store.

The key thing with acrylic paint is that it dries very quickly which can a blessing when you are ready to tidy away. Or a curse if you don’t know how quickly it dries and it ruins your brush!

When the paint dries it is impossible to remove it from clothing, surfaces and brushes. So cover yourself with ‘painting clothes’ and be sure to clean your brushes before the paint dries on them. Once you have the right equipment this isn’t a problem.

Acrylic Paint Palette

Beginners to acrylic painting should either buy or make a reservoir palette. This is a palette with a damp reservoir with a disposable paper on top of it. You mix the colors on the paper. This means that the paint on the paper remains damp and ready to use.

A ’shop-bought’ reservoir palette often has a separate section for brushes. Usually the brushes will be placed on their sides with the tips of the brushes in some water to stop the paint drying on the brush. There is a cover for the palette that keeps the moisture in and makes sure that the paint doesn’t dry out. It’s all laid out in a nice tidy container.

If you feel that you don’t want to spend money on something when you’re just beginning with acrylic paints there is another choice. Make your own. You can make up your own version of this using a flat dish or tray with a low edge. Place a few layers of blotting paper or a layer of capillary matting (often used in greenhouses to keep the plants damp) in the bottom for the reservoir.

Cover this reservoir with tracing or greaseproof paper. This paper is used as your palette. This is where you will place the paints when you’re using them and mix them on top of this paper too.

Keep the reservoir moist - not too wet - and the paints will not dry out. It is important that in between painting sessions you cover your palette to keep the moisture in. A large plastic bag that is large enough to hold the whole palette is ideal.

The brushes will need their own reservoir too. This will stop them drying with paint on them. If the paint dries on the brush it will stick and the brush will be ruined. Use a long narrow container like an ice cube tray for the brushes. They rest on their sides in the water. If you just put the brushes in a jar of water then the tips will eventually get bent out of shape and the brushes will need to be replaced.

When beginning with acrylic paints it is best to buy nylon brushes as nylon brushes can be left soaking in the water. If you tried that with a sable brush it would be ruined.

OK now you have a reservoir palette and some nylon artist brushes what else do you need to complete your beginner’s acrylic paint set?

Well there are only two other things - paints and something to paint on. We’ll need to discuss that in other Beginners Acrylic Painting articles.

A Keepsake Jar of Summer Memories

Arts & Crafts

Our summer was certainly full of fun: outdoor barbeques, neighborhood cookouts, making ice cream, 4th of July parades, a trip to grandpa’s house, sleeping late, moving my oldest daughter into her first apartment… It never seems like the season is long enough to do everything we want to do.

Now that the summer is almost over, how do we preserve these memories? Take a few minutes before the busy routine of school begins to put together a family album of summer keepsakes. Whether it’s in a scrapbook, photo album, or shoebox, these mementoes chronicle tidbits of family life that often become lasting traditions. Your kids will love showing friends and family how they spent their summer vacation.

And don’t forget to snap a picture on the first day of school. We take a photograph in the same spot every year. My daughter left for her first year of college. In the opening page of her scrapbook were all of the pictures we had taken on the first day of school. From the scared preschooler with the little lamb name tag, to the confident, beautiful young woman she blossomed into, each picture was truly worth a thousand words.

Want a quick and easy way to make a time capsule of your summer vacation?

Find a large, clean, wide mouth jar (mayonnaise jars work well) to hold your treasures.

Gather together pictures, ticket stubs, sea shells, maps, souvenirs, pressed flowers or anything that has sentimental value from you summer vacation.

Write names and dates on the back of photographs. Place all of your items inside the jar. On brightly colored paper, write a few notes about each event. You may want to interview other family members for their thoughts as well.

Preserve your summer stories in a place of honor. Kids will enjoy getting their keepsake jar down to tell stories for many summers to come.

Choice between Foreclosure and Bankruptcy

Your Finance Resources, Credit Matters, Helpful Stuff

Bankruptcy is a legal action filed by someone who is not able to pay her debt as agreed. Once bankruptcy is filed, all civil legal proceedings related to the home loan will be halted. Consequently, a home loan lender must interrupt every collection action. A mortgage company might be permitted to go forward if they apply for relief from the automatic stay period; and if it is permitted, may go on with the aforementioned action. Filing for Bankruptcy will not halt foreclosure and you must still pay back your home loan. Bankruptcy can not solve the original issues, it only makes the process go forward slowly.

Hoards of consumers might have to select between filing financial insolvency or allowing their mortgage lender to foreclose on their home. If bi-weekly or monthly home loan payments are not received on time, the bank can file for a foreclosure on the property. You can disrupt the house foreclosure proceedings by paying the lender on schedule. Foreclosure is exactly the same for everyone who has not been able to pay their house loan, the mortgage lender will start the foreclosure process. Mortgage loans are very similar to car loans; if you do not make monthly payments you might have it repossessed.

Even though bankruptcy is not going to halt a foreclosure permanently, it will allow a person extra time to pay back the over due or at least it will make it little less difficult to to repay a lender. Bankruptcy law requires a home loan to freeze foreclosure actions, a debtor has a bit of time to raise the funds necessary to pay back the creditor. Bankruptcy is the last option for any borrower. Eventually bankruptcy will come about when he is completely unable to pay their creditor’s commitments. With bankruptcy, some non-secured debts will in all probability be discharged but the home loan will remain. The home loan borrower must be prepared to repay the real estate loan within the required time as the debt is guaranteed by real property. Additionally, chapter thirteen bankruptcy has a schedule of payments that will be ordered by the bankruptcy court, and will allow the home owner make payments on their home loan to get caught up on their balance.

Before the borrower can file for bankruptcy, they have to meet the standards. If they do qualify, there will be legal fees incurred. It may cost the borrower more in legal fees than it does to just pull the belt tighter and clear the late payments owed. If you know somebody that is of the mind that declaring bankruptcy will be a benefit to the situation, a bankruptcy lawyer might be capable of answering any questions. Because bankruptcy is extremely complicated and detailed, consumer should not set about to do it without help from a a lawyer.

This article is just standard information. This is not legal advice. We have not made any representation that this article constitutes legal advice. You might be required to meet with a bankruptcy lawyer in your particular state with any questions.

Poetry Critics

Arts & Crafts

I’ve been writing poetry for quite some time. I care about the art and how the art effects people.

I want to talk some about how poetry is seen in my opinion and how narrow the view of some can be when it comes to poetry and the worth and value it holds in society. I’ve heard many times by reviewers and critics and even booksellers that poetry books are hard to sell and that little interest is taken in the art of poetry by the general public but I beg to differ on these views held by so many in the literary world.

I feel poetry is such a unique and expressive art that has stood the test of time and as we look back on poets like Wordsworth and Dickinson and all the wonderful poets of a time gone by we can all agree that nobody can discount or dismiss the contributions these people have made to the literary world.

The Wordsworth’s and Lord Byron’s are still out there today working hard to bring back into the mainstream the powerful emotions and feelings that once struck a chord so long ago. These people are putting their heart and soul into their words and putting forth messages that they want to share with readers from all origins and backgrounds.

We should not put limitations on them by telling them their art is dead or that their art is not much of a selling point in society because it is and if it wasn’t we would not have so many poetry forums and websites accross the infinite space of the internet from nation to nation. One website I visited has over five million poets in their database alone so obviously their is an interest in poetry and it’s growing bigger with every passing day. Multitudes of people from accross the globe enjoy this art we call poetry and this is a fact that should not be ignored.

There is also a problem in my view with some people who take the role of critic and these people judge the work of others and seek to influence how an individual chooses to express themselves through poetry. I feel that each person and expression is unique and I have never been much of a fan of the critic as Teddy Roosevelt reminded us in ” The Battle of Life ” it’s not the critic that counts and I agree.

Individualism and uniqueness spawns genius in my opinion in every facet of life or work and it’s also certainly true when it comes to poetry. I want to read new and freshly presented material from someone original. I don’t want to see someone trying to copy another artist or his or her ways. I want to see someone expressing their own ways that I will not judge because I feel I have no rightful place in doing so.

We must remember that it’s not my opinion or the opinion of a critic that counts when it comes to you and your work and the feelings you wish to present. These things are yours and yours alone that nobody should touch or try to fine tune in any fashion. If Shakespeare had allowed his work to be sorted out and played with by the masses then he would not have been the Shakespeare we know today and your work will not be yours if you allow it to be changed to fit the views of others.

Let your vision and your work live and die on it’s own and let it live independantly and develop into what you wish it to be not what someone else wants it to be so it never ceases to be your very own.

Publishamerica poet.

Ode, to the Mighty Midget Omac [In English and Spanish]

Arts & Crafts

Part One
Midget History

I am thirty-six inches tall, that is all

Honest to god I am
My hair is green, my eyes red, and I

Have a very thick neck

My eyebrows are thin, and my beard

Has three hairs…
And I bore abuse, when I was young

Yes! It happened to be; day by day…

…folks laugh at me, my appearance

You see…I make them appalled.
.

I am middle aged, not very old, nor am

I: pious, poor, or a fool;
My wrinkles and blemishes are as they

AreI’d not change them

…for food or gold… .

I came from a race, from within the earth

More ancient than man himself;
So what do I do, I leave it to you

Just call me Omac, the Mighty Midget.

.

Ah! I’ve lived in this world of evil and bad

Sad and heartbreaking, to say the least
Everyone preoccupied with everything

With neighbors, housewives and thieves.

The only one I can think of, that I do not

Despise or hate, is an acquaintance
I’ve met, in the depths of Iceland,

He left me a riddle to think:

Said he “Why do you call me a great man?

One you do not understand; with
Dog-like devotion and faith?

Perhaps it is that, a midget can’t live

…without an impressive mate?”

Said I to him, as he walked away, “It is

Because you’re impressive to
Them, not me!…”

Part Two
Midget Hell

I visited hell, once upon a time with

Its torture chambers and horrid
Rhymes…

If I could, I would take half of earththere,

Simply to see what they could bear;
Thus, her soft white dreams that she

Once seen, would then be in

…the devils care.

.

With scorpions, dim and dark, and spiteful

And horrible soundsof hissing
By your bed; with all of this I fear my friend,

In Hell, you’d wish you were never dead.

As the wiggly worms climb all about, what

Gruesome view to hear men shout;
To see the horned malamute dogs growl

Savagely, licking everything foul.

.

But I am a midget, of thirty-six inches tall

That is all…,
Blue-eyed, wings that don’t fly,

Blood that rushes to my head…

…When I get mad

Oh, sometimes I play the fool, I jerk and

Shiver all over, but no one
NoticesI’d like to squash them too;

My life in their minds, unnoticed.

Part Three
Midget Madness

I hate those I can understand; those I

Do not, I find myself unarmed,
And wishing I could.

Everyone’s in a bubble of superiority,

This of course irritates me…
Their soft white hush, which is more like

Cadaverous mush, wrapped up

…up, in their crystal like dreams!

If it was up to me, I’d rape the whores

And kill the queen;
That’s the sensible side of me,

The Midget side, if you please.

.

Hell with the meaning of life, just give me

A dagger or knife; wise men die
Like midgets and fools, the only difference

Is, they went to school.

The fate of man, is not in his hands,

As he’d like all to believe!
Nor will pious images save him, they

Come and go like fools gold;

This is very plane to see!

I need no flattery like they, only a

Purpose for today…!

Part Four
Midget Love

I have sung many praises to love and

Beauty:
Above all, they sing back to me:

“The waters are still, the witches
Are real, and twilight is chilled;

But my heart is tattered gray
For who loves a midget anyway?”

I have my cross, where the Christians

Walk, for I tried to be a Christian
You see; and by love and faith

I made a mistake…a midgets’ a

…midget, also,
in the halls of Christianity.

.

Blaspheme, blaspheme, everywhere,

I’d like to load my gun,
Face the sun, twist some bones

In and out of their chest!…

Too bad I’m harmless…

I look out my midget door, once more

Very little do I see, only people
So many people, with envy, envy;

I just wanted to be loved you see.

Part Five
Chavin De Huantar

I must return today! Ancient am I

Compared to thee…
They are taking me back with an

Escort I see, like a prince

…under a princes care.

They are humble to me, I’m not human

You see, or so I wish not to be;
To them I’m a millionaire.

There is no pretence…

…in the world for them…
And in Chavin de Huantar I’ll be.

.

In point of fact, I’ll never be back,

Chavin de Huantar will be
My home; even the ignorant understand

One must wash his hands, when…

…all that is left is famine!…

Oda, al Enano Poderoso Omac

Translated by Nancy Penaloza

Parte Uno

Historia Diminuta

S! Result ser; da a da …
…amigos se ren de m, mi aspecto

Usted ve…yo los hago horrorizar.
.

yo: piadoso, pobre, o un idiota;

Ms antiguo que el hombre mismo;

Uno no entiende;

Simplemente para ver lo que ellos podran llevar;
As, sus sueos suaves blancos que ella

Una vez vio, entonces estara en
…el cuidado del diablo.
.

Vista espantosa, or grito de hombres-;

nota - me gustara aplastarlos también;

Mi vida en sus mentes, inadvertidas.

Parte Tres

Locura Diminuta

Odio a aquellos puedo entender;

No hago, me encuentro desarmado,
Y deseando yo podra.

Y matara a la reina-;
Esto es mi lado sensible ,

El lado Diminuto, con su permiso.
.

como oro de tontos;

Son verdadero, y el crepsculo es frio;

enanos
…enano, también,
en los pasillos de cristianismo.

.
Blasfeme, blasfeme, por todas partes,

Me gustara cargar mi arma,
Afrontar el sol, torcer algunos huesos

dentro y fuera de su pecho!…
Demasiado malo soy inofensivo

Miro mi puerta diminuta, una vez ms

Muy poco hago, yo veo, slo pueblo
Tantas personas, con envidia, envidia;

Solamente quise ser amado usted ve.

Parte Cinco

Chavin de Huantar

Debo volver hoy! Antiguo soy yo

Comparado a Usted …

Usted ve, o entonces deseo no ser;
para ellos soy un millonario.

No hay ningn pretexto …
…en el mundo para ellos …
Y en Chavin de Huantar yo ser.
.

En realidad, nunca volveré,

Chavin de Huantar ser
Mi casa; an el ignorante entienden

Hay que lavar sus manos, cuando …
…todol es dejado es el hambre!…

Durom Cup Legal Issues Not Great for Hip Implant Recipients

Lawyers' World, The Healthy Way, Helpful Stuff

Many individuals who got defective hip implant applied in their hip cup replacement surgical procedures are encountering that there are negative effects that far exceed the normal expectations for recuperation. These implant recipients are feeling a lot of excess pain sensation for lengthier periods of time, facing revision surgical operations and magnified medical expenses, and losing income by not physically being able to work at their normal businesses. Although Zimmer Holdings, Inc. is laying claim that that their hip cup implant is not possibly imperfect and have basically denied blame for the surgical failures, some implant recipients are filing lawsuits against them and encountering settlements.

In October, 2008 Zimmer announced that it had set aside $47.5 million to pay for lawsuits they had filed against them and received. Many MD’s are not convinced that the zimmer hip implant is not faulty as the company has suggested. As A Matter Of Fact, when Zimmer offered online education to doctors in order to teach them what was supposedly more correct methods for doing the implant operation, approximately half of the MD’s refused to take part. Hence, the whole situation remains to be trying for all doctors participating, but none more than the hundreds of unfortunate people who are facing revision surgery because of the problems with their implant experiencing failures.

These distressed individuals definitely merit some aid and restitution which obviously is why product liability lawyers are supporting them by telling them to initiate lawsuits. sulzer hip implants has been resolving these claims before they go to court. However, even if the money they are being offered sounds like a fair amount, in many cases implant recipients are deciding too quickly and with no provision or allowance put in place for repeat issues if pain returns. If they don’t hold off and wait, to find out what an actual case is worth, individuals could find themselves paying thousands of dollars out of their own funds when further complications arise.

Learn About Love From Poet Rumi

Arts & Crafts

In this modern age of technology, busy lifestyles, and obsession with consumerism have taken a lot of the romance and love out of our lives. The Internet has become a medium to connect with people as everyone is finding it a lot harder to meet one another in the ‘real’ world. It has undeniably also become a place of voyeuristic fantasy in the realms of sexuality on pornographic sites. What ever happened to true love? Are our priorities so messed up that romance has been forgotten, only to be experienced vicariously through television and movies? The answer is no. Romance will never die; we just have to feed it with our energy.

Around 800 years ago a famous Arabic poet, philosopher and sage named Rumi wrote beautiful love poetry beyond all comparison. I don’t know if there have been many other people in Earth’s history that have thought about love as much as this master. His poems have not been forgotten, and one place you can simply find and read them is on the Internet. E.g. www.khamush.com/love_poems.html

The beauty of the heart
The beauty of the heart
is the lasting beauty:
its lips give to drink
of the water of life.
Truly it is the water,
that which pours,
and the one who drinks.
All three become one when
your talisman is shattered.
That oneness you can’t know
by reasoning. (Rumi)

Of course you can also buy books by Rumi on the Net as well, but the main point here is that the Internet doesn’t just give us access to our present time and place; it gives us a means to connect with past realities often assumed to be lost in time. It is quite ironic and paradoxical that we can use this modern space age tool to connect with our cultural, spiritual and social heritages. We as a society have come a long way in terms of our technological development, but it is well known throughout the world that our ancestors were much more evolved in these important areas where our growth has become stunted due to a lack of awareness and narrow perspectives on life.

Love, romance, spirituality, none of these things need be forgotten. The answers aren’t locked away in tombs and pyramids; they are still here lingering in the back of our consciousness. All we need to do is to get the desire to fulfil our lives by these means and we will search and find the ways. Human beings are incredibly resourceful creatures. When we put our minds to something we can make just about anything happen. I don’t want to imply that the answers to our problems are easy, or that the Internet is our sole saviour. I am just amazed at how all things in life are connected, and that we just have to open our eyes to see the all too obvious!
