A blog usually is a web page that contains brief, discrete hunks of information called posts. These posts are arranged in reverse-chronological order (the most recent come first) and each is uniquely identified by an anchor tag which is marked with a permanent link that can be referred to by others who wish to link to it.
A blog is a means of communication and there are many different types of messages carried by blogs. Some are nothing but pointers to other web sites, while others run long essays, some are personal diaries, others feature technology, and some are edited by one person, others by teams.
There are hundreds of thousands of blogs on the Internet, and new blogs are created every day. Can anybody and more importantly can you blog? Yes, there are bloggers of all types, equipped with all levels of technical skills. Bloggers approach their sites with as much variety and passion as the general Net public approaches the Web itself.
The most commonly used blogging tool is Blogger. It requires the least amount of commitment in time or resources, allowing you to go from wanting a blog to having one in about five minutes and at no cost. The Blogger software is the property of Pyra Labs (www.pyra.com). Blogger is often credited as the reason for the explosion of blogging that’s occurred in the last couple of years. It is a web-based tool, requiring no installation of software on your personal computer or on your server if you happen to have a web site. You access the tool through the Blogger web site (http://blogger.com) and the blog pages are posted to your web site or to Pyra’s BlogSpot (http://blogspot.com) community blog server.
For more detailed information on this see O’Reilly’s Essential Blogging.
Re-read anything before you publish. Electronic text can expose unintended meaning easily and it will also make what you say a lot more focused. If nothing else, it should help you catch spelling mistakes! Blogging is a way to share your opinions and thoughts to the rest of the world. If you post interesting things, share links with other bloggers and post comments on other blogs. Linking is the way of the Web that is the key of successful blogging.
In order to keep your blogs really fresh, invite a group of your friends / colleagues and give them blogging access. That way you will have several reporters blogging information and you won’t end up killing yourself, trying to keep your blog populated with good information. If you use Blogger, upgrade to Blogger Pro. You can have your team post to the blog from email, create and syndicate your blog as an RSS feed, and a whole lot more! Adding the ability to post comments on your blog extends interactivity and usefulness to the blog itself.
Blogs are about community and information, and commenting is a real way to gauge your viewer’s blogging efforts. Blogging is one of the quickest ways to update your site. Syndicating others’ blogs into your own site is another. There is a wealth of information out there - just tap into it!

The Best of the Web (botw.org), one of the internet’s original website directories (created in 1994), has decided to tackle the blogosphere in a big wayby introducing a hand-edited blog directory. Although the directory was soft launched on November 12 of this year and officially launched November 15th at the WebmasterWorld Search Engine and Internet Marketing Conference in Las Vegas, the directory boasts over 5000 blogs. The Best of the Web blog directory is located at blogs.botw.org.
The search portion of the Best of the Web blog directory is still in beta, and should be “ready for release within the next 30 days. We are still tweaking the post functionality of the search - grabbing current content from the directory…kind of like Technorati does, without all the spam”, according to Greg Hartnett from Best of the Web.
According to Hartnett, “we have been interested in blogging for about 18 months, and have been monitoring it closely for the last 12. We came up with the concept of the blog directory in July of this year, and began development shortly thereafter. We were able to draw off the experience of building the BOTW directory, and minor modifications of the underlying code enabled us to deploy an admin interface for it within days. From there, it was a matter of figuring out some of the taxonomy and filling in the blanks.”
Right now, there are currently just over five thousand blogs listed in the Best of the Web Blog Directory. According to Hartnett, they plan on having close to twenty thousand blogs listed when they beta launch the search portion of the site. Since Best of the Web has been around since 1994, they have the directory submission process pretty much down to a science. Just like in the BOTW Directory, each blog gets manually reviewed. While they welcome new websites at the BOTW Directory, only blogs that are a minimum of six months old are considered for inclusion in the Best of the Web Blog directory. Additionally, the blogs must be currentwith active posts, and all blogs must be relevant to the category in which they’re submitted. They also must contain unique contentthere is zero tolerance for spam blogs, often referred to as splogs (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Splog).
Currently, all submissions to the Best of the Web blog directory are free of charge. According to Hartnett, “in the here and now, the submission flow is still at a level where our editors can review the submissions in a pretty timely fashion. Additionally, the level of spam submissions that we are receiving aren’t in the danger zone. Once the submissions get to a level that it makes sense, we will introduce a submission fee. Market forces will dictate exactly how that will work and what how much it will cost.”
According to Best of the Web, “we see blogging as the most recent killer-ap–a new medium for the transmission of information to the masses in a conversational format. Unlike websites, which tend to be more commercial in nature, and definitely much more of a monologue in terms of information flow, blogs tend to be more informational in nature (though corporate uses for it have become more mainstream), and by definition facilitate a conversational atmosphere between author and audience. So, you have not only readers, but active participants in your informational stream. As active bloggers, we saw a gap in the market–no place that was (a) committed to providing a directory of quality blogs, and (b) providing tag based search that wasn’t crushed by spam. We saw the opportunity to use our experience building the BOTW directory to marry a quality directory of blogs with a killer search product. The blog directory stands alone from the BOTW directory for the following reasons: (1) the difference between the mediums (blog versus website) is great enough that they warrant separation; (2) BOTW directory uses its own proprietary site search, while the blog directory uses a tag-based post search.”
Founded in 1994 at the University of Buffalo, Best of the Web has been a pioneer in recognizing the best sites online. From the initial concept of Web Awards, BOTW has transformed into a general directory spotlighting the web’s premier destinations. All sites listed in the directory are examined by our team of editors, and only if qualified are granted inclusion. Editorial review ensures that all sites are appropriately listed in their most relevant category. BOTW currently employs more than 70 paid editors, many with experience at other major directories including Yahoo, DMOZ, Looksmart, and About.com. BOTW remains committed to building a comprehensive directory of content rich, well designed websites, categorized both topically and regionally.

If you have joined the blogging revolution that is sweeping the net, and you think you might want to make a little revenue - or a lot of revenue - from your blogging efforts, you need AdSense tips for bloggers. Blogging has opened up an entirely new way of how non-technical people interact with the Internet, and now, anyone can publish anything about any topic - without having a website - and anyone can profit without even having a product!
Adsense for blogs make perfect sense. Google’s advertising programs are designed to work with sites related to the keywords for the ads that are being presented. Each time you add content to your blog, the Google spiders gobble it up. The more you update, the more the Google spider visits your page. Ultimately, you move up in the SERPs (Search Engine Results Pages) for the topics that you write about. You see where this is going. The higher your search ranking, the more traffic you receive, which ultimately leads to higher revenue from AdSense ads.
The beauty of blogs is their potential for rapid growth. If you become known as an expert in your area of expertise, word of mouth spreads quickly and your blog can become very popular. So it is vital that you always teach something with every blog entry. You want your readers to come back frequently and they will if they know they will learn something. Not only will your readers bookmark your blog and return often, but they will link to your blog enthusiastically as well. People in forums will refer to your blogs and discuss what they learned. Websites will link to you as a valuable resource. In short, an informative blog can grow very quickly if the information it provides is valuable.
It is important to write about specific topics, and sprinkle your blog entries with specific keywords to get the best results - and the highest revenue - with your Google AdSense ads. There is a method to the madness. Start your revenue generating blog by testing the waters.
Decide what area you would like to write about and then do some keyword research. Research is easy if you use Google’s keyword tools found at https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordSandbox . The keyword tools are located in your Google AdWords account. Yes, you need a free AdWords account to be successful but you don’t have to fund it to use the keyword tools. Look for keywords related to your subject that are high paying. These are keywords where the bid amounts are high. Make a list of the top paying keywords, and use that list to determine what topics you will write about.
Remember, you want people to visit your blog time and time again, and build up a readership, make sure that your blog is well written and informative. Don’t just target keywords for the sake of targeting keywords - the writing needs to make sense! Writing valuable content is the first step to generating traffic to your blog, and traffic is needed to profit from AdSense ads!
You are allowed to use the AdSense ad units in two different places on each page. You can accomplish this in a couple of different ways. First, you can add the AdSense ad code to the template for your blog. This is done through the control panel for your blog, and some knowledge of HTML is needed. The other option is to paste the AdSense code directly in your blog post each time you submit a new post. You can use it once at the top and once at the bottom, or once after a few paragraphs of the post, and again after a few more paragraphs.
Get that code in there however you see fit - but then pay close attention to the results so you can see what is working and what isn’t. Tracking is everything if you want to make real money!
Of course, you need to advertise your blog as much as possible as well. Make sure that you provide Trackbacks to other people’s blogs as often as possible, and that you visit blogs, leave comments - and leave a link for your blog as well!

The Blog!
They’re popping up everywhere. Your favorite website has one. Your favorite television show has one. Even your teenager has one. Blogs. What are they? Why are they everywhere you look?
Most simply put, blogs are like journalsonly, instead of being made of the paper and cardboard kept secret by an even thinner piece of cardboard and a lock your baby brother frequently opened with a paperclip, these journals are online. Why does it seem like everyone has one? Well, because almost everyone does. And there’s good reason. Blogs can be used as journals, both private and public; they can be used as ways for fans to discuss the latest episode of their favorite sitcom; or, they can be used by major companies, especially those that are Internet-based, because unlike the traditional forms of advertising, blogs bring in more traffic.
For business purposes, there are many ways companies use blogs. For example, a company may have several blogs on its website, each one dedicated to something different: customer concerns, product updates, etc. In addition to being helpful to customers and other website visitors, these blogs bring in more traffic to the website, as well. Depending on the website, more traffic usually means more money. And more money meansthat’s rightyou’re on your way to that summer home in Hawaii
So, how exactly do blogs bring in more traffic? Well, Adsense ads with Google are a good starting point. The search engine visits your page more each time your update, ultimately moving your blog higher and higher on the SERPs (Search Engine Results Page) and leading to more revenue from the ads being represented in your blog.
Some pointers? First, the blogger will need to decide what he or she is going to write about. Choose a popular topic, one that people are interested in. “Underwater Basket Weaving” probably wouldn’t be a very wise choice as not many people seem to be interested in it. Unless, of course, you’re business is underwater basket weaving, in which case you should by all means write about it. Next, focus on some keywordsthese are the words that search engines are going to pick up on. Don’t dowse your blog in these words, but use them whenever you effectively can. Lastly, make sure you write content that will attract, and keep, a strong readership. You want your readers to keep coming back, right?
Go ahead, join the millions of people and businesses alike. Get yourself a blog. Or corner your boss and suggest writing one for your company. Explain how blogs bring in more traffic, more traffic means more money, and more money meansthat’s right again!you’re on your way to Hawaii

How I optimize my blogs for AdSense and have a good CTR with user friendly environment.
I saw a lot of talking around this topic “How to optimize AdSense for blogs.”
Last night I decided to publish this article since a lot of new webmasters are trying to make some money with blogs, but don’t know what are the best techniques of AdSense optimization for blogs.
I. First of all when starting to optimize a blog you must be familiar with HTML, PHP, CSS and how to manipulate the scripts you are using for blog publishing. Without knowing this, you will not be able to make things move the way you want. If you are not experienced web developer try to hire a pro.
II. Do not put the ads to flood your page. This will make your visitors want to close the pages, and you will lose more than you can win. Try to make your pages look clean and easy to read.
III. Test different styles, sizes, and colors for your ads. From my experience when you blend the ads with the content you will have more results. In these days the internet is saturated with banners, pop-ups, and other types of advertising. Most of the users don’t like this. To make them click on the ads you must blend the ads with your content.
IV. Try to make ORIGINAL articles and posts. This will make your visitors come back.

Today’s software makes it so easy to set up a blog that it seems like everybody and their neighbor has a blog. Yes, they are a fad right now. And yes, they are a great business tool for any business, large or small – and they’re here to stay.
Especially for the independent professional, a blog is an easy communication tool to build credibility and trust. Most importantly, blogs make it easy for people to find you on the Web.
But 9 out of 10 blogs created will be abandoned because they can take up a lot of time in a busy professional’s life, and results may not be evident right away.
There are several keys to making your blog work for you, instead of the other way around. Once you learn and integrate these steps, it should take you only 10-20 minutes per post. It’s recommended that an additional 20 minutes a couple of times per week should be spent reading and commenting on other blogs and sites on the Web so you can bring valuable information to your readers.
7 Secrets to a Successful Business Blog
1. Write valuable content and share stories to showcase your knowledge and expertise. Don’t forget to explain how you work with clients and let readers know how to contact you, hire you, buy a product or register for your services.
2. Write 2-3 times a week, short articles of 250-350 words each time. Occasionally, a longer article can be shared, using the extended post feature.
3. Link profusely to other resources on the web. This is essential for building traffic and enlarging your reading audience. Spend some time, 2-3 times a week researching your area of expertise on the Web. Leave comments on other blogs.
4. Submit to blog directories and ping each time you post. If you don’t know how to do this, get a blog coach or buy and read an instructional manual, such as the ebook at www.BuildaBetterBlogSystem.com.
5. Track and monitor your visitor stats. Install a counter on your blog so you know what’s happening. For example, a free counter can be found at www.SiteMeter.com.
6. List all your products and affiliate products and make sure you have the landing pages properly linked. Use your affiliate links and ad-tracking features if you have a shopping cart.
7. Don’t forget to link to your own website and vice versa! This is one reason we prefer to have the blog separate from your website, rather than installing blog software incorporated into your website. It’s like having two fishing poles in the pond.
Like any marketing effort, persistence pays off. In six months of regular blogging, assuming you are providing valuable content, you should see a significant increase in your web site traffic, the client leads, and overall total revenue for your business.
If not, you’re not blogging smart!

If you have a blog, or are thinking about starting a blog, then you are definitely going to want to read this article. It’s all about how to line your pockets with money that’s just waiting to be made without working much harder than you already are.
No only are blogs the hottest thing on the ‘net right now, but they are custom-made for Google’s AdSense program. Why? It’s simple. Blogs represent constantly changing and fresh content to Google’s search engine spiders. Feeding fresh content to those little spiders is just like tossing raw meat to a tiger. They just gobble it up. The more pages of your blog that get indexed, the more traffic you get. And the more traffic you get, the more exposure your AdSense ads get. Are you beginning to see where I’m heading here?
It’s not just Google that loves new content, all of the major engines do. In fact, some web-savvy bloggers are testing Google ads on one page and Overture ads on the other. It doesn’t take too long to see which ads are doing the best when you have nearly side-by-side comparison statistics to look at. Just don’t make the mistake of putting Google and Overture ads on the same page together. While they won’t kill each other like a pair of Siamese fighting fish in the same bowel will, you will be violating both sites’ Terms of Service, and it isn’t worth killing the goose (geese) that laid the golden egg.
It’s a snap to set up Google AdSense ads on your blog. Everything you need to know is right inside of the Google control panel. What’s not so easy is figuring out what ads are going to appear on each page. Since Google targets your key words, and your blog articles could possible wander towards any subject, you never know what you’re going to get.
Well, “never” is a strong word because there actually IS a way to pre-test your blog’s ads before you post your newest edition. Here’s what you do:
• Write your blog article like you normally would
• Plug in your AdSense code and then post your newest page to a sub directory that’s not part of your blog.
• Click refresh a few times until Google wakes up and starts sending ads.
• If you don’t like what you see then fine-tune the article until you see the types of ads that you’re looking for.
With some ads paying as much as $5 per click or more, I’d certainly spend an extra 30 minutes or so tweaking my blog. That’s for sure.
If you’re working hard to get your blog in front of visiting eyeballs, then it doesn’t make any sense at NOT to be using Google AdSense to draw every penny out of your site that’s possible. OK, that’s the end of the article. Now get busy tweaking your blog and checking your ads. You’ve got money waiting to be made!

This question does not have a one sentence answer! If I just said that one uses this icon to get a site’s RSS feed, you still won’t understand. So let’s try and answer you in such a way that it all makes sense to you and, more importantly, that you learn how to benefit from it.
Let’s say that you like my web site very much and you would like to read new content as I add it. At this stage there is no way of informing you when I’ve added a new page except for notifying you by email. This assumes that you’ve provided me with your e-mail address - which most people are hesitant to do any way. The other way is for you to bookmark my site - but how many times do people really go back to a site?
What if I told you that you could have a little “window” (called a reader or an aggregator) on your monitor and that, each time I updated my site, you are automatically informed about it. How, you may ask? A headline (called a news feed) and a short summary to inform/tease you is squirted to your reader. If the teaser interests you, all you need to do is follow the hyperlink that will take you to that page on my web site where you can read it all. If you’re not interested, you simply delete the headline. The process is repeated each time I add new content.
You can of course subscribe to as many feeds as you want to - from current affairs to people’s personal blogs (a blog is short for web log which is a diary or a journal on the internet).
So, what must you do to set it up and how much is it going to cost?
Let’s answer the second question first: Setting it up is FREE - it will cost you nothing.
This is how to setup a reader or an aggregator on a Windows system:
Download Microsoft’s .NET framework here:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=262D25E3-F589-4842-8157-034D1E7CF3A3&displaylang=en“
Install this on you system.
Download RSSReader from here:
http://www.rssreader.com/
Install this on you system.
You are now ready to add your first feed.
As an example I’ll walk you through the process of adding my site http://www.perfect-party-ideas.com ’s XML feed. Navigate to the site. On the home page you will see the orange XML icon. Right-click the XML icon and then click the “Copy Shortcut” option.
Open the RSSReader and click on the green “+ Add” icon in the top left hand corner. A form opens up that prompts you to enter the URL of the feed. Just paste the URL here (ctrl-v). Well done - you’ve just added your very first RSS feed.
Let’s test if it is working. Click the “Get” icon which is to the left of the “+Add” icon. You should see a number of feeds arriving in your reader. Simply double-click the ones you are interested in to read the summary. Click the “Read more” or “Open in a Browser” links if you want to read the whole article.
Was it that difficult? No, I agree, it’s fairly straight forward.
Now you are ready to sign up for more feeds. Why not sign up for my blog’s feed as well? I use my blog to document the process of setting up my web site. There I share my ideas, failures, frustrations, doubts, successes, and articles that have I found useful. And, B.t.w. I also tell you how to make money from your web site.
If you’re interested in following the exciting journey, just copy and paste this URL exactly as you did with the previous one.
http://perfect-party-ideas.blogspot.com/atom.xml
Congratulations - you have entered the exciting world of RSS!
