For the past two years we’ve been following the state of Kentucky’s moves in the courtroom dealing with “illegal gambling operations.” In short, the state filed a complaint against several online poker room operators and threatened to seize 141 poker online domain names as “tools that aid in illegal gambling activity.”

On March 19th, 2010 the case was finally heard by the state’s Supreme Court. Only, it wasn’t really heard, it was just appealed to for it’s opinion on standing. There are two main companies in the middle of this whole mess, Imega Gaming and Interactive Gaming Council. The ruling was in favor of the two poker companies, but it’s only temporary.

The court opined that these two entities did not have standing to litigate on behalf of the anonymous domain registrants, however they were given 20 days to refile in appeals court. The only caveat was that someone from the domain had to present an affidavit that he was a member of one of the associations (either IMEGA or ICG) and could therefore be represented by them.

Joe Brennan, Imega’s chairman, said, “We’re going to file it. There’s no question about that.” The upside to this is that if one case prevails, the rest of the domains and domain owners prevail as well.

As the chips have fallen, it seems that Kentucky got drawn out on at the river. “Numerous compelling arguments endorsing the grant of writ of prohibition (which would effectively make the state unable to seize the domains) have been presented. Although all such arguments have merit, none can be considered unless a presented by a party with real standing.”

Seems the Supreme court has been persuaded.

Betting is what wins in poker. It drives all the action and helps to narrow the field of competitors by forcing others to fold. There are several basic online poker strategies and types of bets you can make, and each has a different purpose.

Consider these type of scenarios and the types of bets you can make to win the pot:

* Blind steal - this is almost an obvious bet you can make from late position on the button. If everyone has folded to you with only the blinds remaining, then a raise could simply win you the blinds right away. Blind stealing is more useful in tournaments than in cash games.

* Raising to steal - again when you are in late position with no raise in front of you, then a raise could force all the other players to fold. It is a good strategy when you are on a draw and can improve to a good hand because you are building a big pot if you get called. Most commonly those ahead of the raiser will check on the next card to see if you make the continuation bet.

* Scare card bet - when everyone checks a scare card that suggests a straight or flush, and you have bet previously from late position, then make a continuation bet on the scare card even if you have missed your draw.

* Check raise - this is a good strategy from early position. Basically, you check ahead of your online poker opponents, then raise any bet that comes out. It will most likely cause some to fold and make others fearful of betting behind you on the next cards.

* The opener bet - this is a raise from early position meant to scare off the other players. It could be made as a bluff or with a strong starting hand.
