With recent developments in technology, everything is instant, life becomes more convenient.
Even in the field of communication, there is no need for us to exert too much effort - unlike the past when it took quite a long time for our predecesors to pass a message from one place to another.
But now, it is much easier. Inventors are not content with the modernization of telephones and cellular phones, they still discern for something more innovative. This, then, is Satellite Phone Technology.
So, what is a Satellite Phone?
It refers to a subscription radio service. It is similar to cable television - it provides for a wider range of programming and functions that cannot be found on traditional AM or FM radios.
A satellite phone is a telephone-like device that sends radio signals direct to a satellite, then back to the earth station from where the call can be directed to the so-called ‘Public Switched Telephone Network’ or the PSTN that serves as a cellular network. The Low Earth Orbiting or the LEO is the most commonly used satellite now. The gateway processes make everything possible because even if the person is in the middle of nowhere, he can still access to the satellite phone network, by using compatible satellite phones.
Satellite phones are used globally but the only exemption is it cannot work indoors. Bear in mind that, there is a necessity for a clear line of sight from telephone to satellite to utilize the satellite telephone system. The more open the space you are in, the better the reception. This is why satellite phones are used extensively in the desert. The weather condition also affects the performance of the system. Satellite phones have limited bandwidth.
Second, you must also know the areas covered by the Satellite Phones. While it is true that you will have a global coverage for your satellite phones but you have to consider certain limitations. Some of the countries that are excluded from the coverage of its network are: South Korea, North Sri Lanka, Hungary and Poland.
But if you work, live or travel on specific areas that are outside the coverage of your cellular phones or even a landline, then a satellite phone is essential for you to keep in touch with the rest of the world. Unlike other GSM phones, satellite phones are more independent when it comes to the location.
If you think that a satellite telephone may be useful to you, there are several excellent online resources for further information.

A recent tragedy in my community could very well have ended up a PR nightmare, but it was handled with professionalism and compassion. A routine tox screen of a DUI suspect at a hospital turned deadly. Police removed the suspect’s handcuffs so he could submit a urine sample. One armed officer remained in the room with the suspect, with a second officer posted outside the exam room door.
The supsect managed to grab the first officer’s gun and turned the gun on the officer, wounding him. He then fatally shot the second officer and wounded an ER technician. He fled to the hospital roof, where we was apprehended.
What immediate action did the hospital take? It went into “lock-down” mode, meaning no one could leave any floor. This was mainly for the protection of everyone in the hospital. Several staffers in the vicinity of the incident were evacuated and remained outside the hospital during the ordeal.
What immediate action did the police take? Trained to respond to such situations, they literally surrounded the hospital. The main road leading to the hospital was closed. Residents of nearby neighborhoods were unable to leave. Employees of nearby businesses were forced to remain at work until the coast was clear.
Did anyone “point fingers” of blame in the wake of this tragedy? No.
What follow-up actions did the hospital take? It revisited its policy of how patients in police custody are examined. Within days, a more secluded area was designated for such cases.
What follow-up actions did police take? The department acknowledged that, while all police procedures were properly followed, perhaps more precautions could have been taken. The out-of-uniform officer did not have his gun in a safety-lock holster. Neither officer new of the suspect’s previous violent behavior, information accessible only from computers at the precinct - not from computers in police cars out in the field.
What PR lessons are there to be learned from this incident? First, communication is key, in any situation. In a crisis situation, however, a crisis communications plan must already be in place. Second, even after the crisis is over, it’s not over. Once the media frenzy has subsided, it’s time to re-evaluate policies and procedures.
The death of the police officer, one who was particularly well-like and respected, hit the community hard. Hundreds upon hundreds of residents lined the streets for the funeral procession. That’s why compassion is such an important component of crisis communications. During and following a crisis, emotions run high. The organizations and businesses that deal with crises on a personal level are those that will create positive, long-lasting relations with their publics.

Consider the following points before selecting the best VOIP
provider: Comparison of call charges of various VOIP providers:
The most important benefit of VOIP usage is cost savings, which
motivates you to use VOIP. So, you should analyse the VOIP call
rate list to ensure maximum cost advantage. Some VOIP companies
offer plans with minute-rate charges while some offer plans for
unlimited usage.
Another factor that you need to consider is the amount of time
for which you may use the service in a month. If you do a lot of
calling, you need a package from a provider with cheaper rates
for heavy usage but if you are a light user, then the provider
who offers a smaller package at lower cost will suit you better.
List the value added calling features offered by different
providers Look at the value added features offered by various
VoIP providers. Some additional features offered are caller ID,
call waiting, call transfer, repeat dial, return call, 3-way
calling, etc. There are some advanced call-filtering options
that allow you to make a choice about how calls from a
particular number are handled. You can forward a call to a
particular number, send the call directly to voicemail, give the
caller a busy signal, play a message, etc using this feature.
But not all VOIP providers have this offer. So, select the one
that offers the features that you need the most. Check the
availability of Local Area Codes in Your Region Consider the
states where the VoIP provider is providing local area codes,
while choosing the service. The provider may claim to provide
you with a number that you can use from anywhere but if the
number isn’t local, then most of your calls will be long
distance. In that case, people in your local area will have to
make long distance calls to talk to you. So you need to check
the availability of area code in your region. Also, some
providers offer access only to a limited number of country
codes.
Confirm call coverage to other providers
Some VOIP providers offer services where calls can be made
only to other VoIP users while others offer the facility for
both VoIP users and those with regular phones. Many offer free
calls to those who use the same service provider. So check these
offers with respect to the associated costs.
Check the Availability of Access to Emergency Services
Confirm whether VOIP providers offer access to emergency
services like 911. These emergency services should be able to
trace your call to your physical location so that they can be of
use. Confirm which providers are offering this facility before
making a choice.
Determine the Quality of Service
Before selecting a VoIP provider, confirm which service provider
has good quality of sound and interface. Take a look at
published reviews for various VoIP services or talk to other
users of the same service. Find out the ease and cost of
installation
Lastly, find out what are the needs for setting up and
installing the service. See if there are any additional costs or
hidden costs. After you have worked on these points, go ahead
and start using the service and enjoy the benefits of VOIP.

Finding the right mobile phone plan is not an easy task.
Competing carriers, features, prices, incompatible phone
technologies and rebates all serve to confuse the mobile phone
shopper. Various points are to be considered while choosing an
appropriate mobile phone service provider and mobile plan.
Ask yourself these questions: how much you use your phone, what
time of the day will you make most of your calls, which mobile
network is used by most of the people you are likely to call and
what kind of services do you want on your mobile? With so many
mobile service providers, prices changing so often, any
information would quickly become out of date. Try to find the
updated information by referring to retailers. Your best deal
would depend on your needs and usage pattern. Explore the
different mobile phone companies’ websites, mobile phone shops
and find out more about their network coverage.
The different plans you can choose from are:
Prepaid plans: Prepaid involves paying upfront for a number of
minutes. Most of these plans have minutes that expire after one
or three months. You’ll have to pay before making calls, with a
credit card or debit card. There are no monthly contracts,
credit checks or minimum contract period.
Monthly contract: In this plan, you are billed for calls and
monthly subscriptions, typically for a minimum contract period
of at least 12 months. There is a wider choice of services and
handsets in this plan. Moreover, call charges and handsets are
generally cheaper. Normally, you get inclusive call minutes,
which is included in your monthly subscription and you are not
charged for it.
Pay up front: In this plan, you are billed monthly, so you can
see where your money is going. You are not charged monthly
subscriptions; and call charges and the price and range of
handsets are similar to prepay.
Apart from choosing the right mobile phone company and tariff
for your usage pattern, you should know how to control the cost
of your mobile service. You may be able to save money by opting
for a tariff having the inclusive call minutes cover all
networks and charges for calling different networks do not vary
much. Find out exactly how you can get more for your money. Find
if the inclusive call minutes you are getting cover calls to
people on other networks as well as yours, find out if the calls
to retrieve voicemail are free, can you buy ‘add on’ services to
save your money overall, for how long will any unused inclusive
call minutes in one month be carried forward.
If you usually use your mobile phone abroad, keep in
mind that calls and text messages can cost much more, especially
if you have a prepaid service. You will also have to pay to
receive calls when abroad. So keep yourself informed about the
details of charges and services that are available from mobile phone
companies before choosing your mobile service provider.

In all of our relationships, whether intimate or business, communication is the key to keeping the relationship moving in the right direction. Sometimes during a conversation, it is important to make sure you understood what was said. What I mean by this, is our own perception is taken in with the audio we are hearing. If you learn to ask the right questions, avoidance of miscommunication can be yours. A good example of what I mean: remember the game telephone you played as a kid? Someone whispers a sentence in the person’s ear next to them, and it moves down the line this way until the last person says it out loud. It never is the same as the original.
It is important that not only when you are listening do you ask the right questions, but when you are giving directions that you ask questions to make sure they were understood. No one likes to be ordered around and if everyone would practice this art of communication, errors could be avoided.
Some good questions and statements to start:
1. Are there any questions regarding this project?
2. I want to make sure I gave clear directions, could you please repeat them back to me? If in a group setting, ask each person if that is what they heard.
3. I just want to make sure that I understand what you are wanting, repeat what you heard, than ask if that is right.
The most important thing is to never accuse. All that does is back someone into a corner and the only thing a person will do when cornered is come out fighting. In those instances, it is better to tell the person how YOU are feeling about what was said.
Remember as with anything, this technique takes time and practice. Eventually, with practice you will override your old habits of communication. One more thing to keep in mind, never speak in anger. Better to step away and calm down, take a deep breath and get your thoughts and words together. Then you can approach the subject with a better frame of mind.
We are all different in the way we communicate and perceive. The above are just a few ways to begin communicating more efficiently. Try it for awhile and see if all your relationships don’t improve, while improving your stress level at the same time.

A review of ways marketers can align with these consumer hot
spots.
Online social networks are hot. Those who participate in them
belong to two, three, four, maybe even more than 10 or 20
different ones. They enjoy their features, upload photos,
request business contacts and talk with friends.
For now, consumers get to do this for free. For now.
Although social networking in the offline world may be
well-established — monetized through conferences, venues,
referral fees and headhunters — the online world seems to just
be examining the methods of monetization. The general principle
still stands: if you have a large database of active users, you
can make money — right?
Here is how it is being done today:
Advertising — A quick review of ad dollar expenditures in the
U.S. reveals that only a small portion of the total is spent
online — but that is going to change fast. Online advertising
is once again booming — and just as public television and print
media often can be sustained from pure advertising models,
online is no different. The leading social networking sites
(MySpace, Friendster and LinkedIN, along with many others) are
primarily supported by advertising. Although their aggressive
growth strategies mean that some may still be losing money,
advertising represents a substantial amount of revenue.
Revenue Share/Per Transaction Fees — Someone clicks on her
friend’s profile on Friendster and sees that he loves HBO’s hit
series “Deadwood.” Clicking on the term ‘Deadwood” brings up all
the other members who have the same interest — and an
easy-to-purchase link for the “Deadwood” Season One DVD through
Amazon. It’s essentially a focused advertising arrangement –
marketers now have precision targeting through social networking
profiles, tapping into user interests — and offering purchase
options within very specific filters.
Events — Although revenue numbers generated from MySpace-style
events are difficult to come by, these events are known to be
well attended and a driving force behind MySpace’s impressive
growth. In general, while it’s unlikely that offline events
account for more than 10 percent of any social network’s
revenue, events do make for great content and word-of-mouth
advertising.
Moving forward, compelling new ways to monetize social networks
will continue to emerge. The downside, however, is that some of
these methods may not be in the user’s best interest — and they
might end up taking the “cool” edge off these communities.
The Buying Club/Affiliate Revenue Models — With Buy.com’s
purchase of Metails, a major offline and online retailer has
recognized the power of social networking and made a commitment
to the space. Yub.com enables users to develop their own social
network focused around products, product ratings and, more
importantly, a point-based rewards system that lets members
benefit from a friend’s purchases. While Yub.com feels like
heavy retail — with a full online mall that has grown rapidly
in the last few months — the site is building a large user base
and enticing members to recommend products to friends. Although
the buying club mentality might work only within certain types
of social networks, the notion of a point system that rewards
users for certain activities should be embraced more broadly. By
developing a currency system, a social networking site can
create very real incentives (promotions, giveaways, contests,
fundraisers) for specific actions, from which everyone can
benefit.
Corporate Sponsorship — Does being a fan of a brand mean that
you want the owner of that brand to have all of your personal
profile information? Practically speaking, the answer has to do
with the type of brand and the reward the user receives for
sharing that information. Corporations will take notice of these
social networks and begin offering competitive services with
products and (if they are smart) experience-based rewards. Just
as Icelounge (described as a “MySpace for skaters”) was
launched, larger brands will begin to do the same. Increased
brand loyalty and sales opportunities will lead directly to
monetization.
Country Clubs/Membership Fees — The SNS world can be a field of
dreams — albeit for a price. As social networking site
ASmallWorld.com has recently demonstrated, if you build a great
social network — making it “invite-only,” with restrictions on
activities — well, everyone wants to join. Naseeb likewise has
proven that a focused social network, aimed at a specific niche,
can justify an admission charge. From where I sit, I’d much
rather be part of a social network with fewer members, no
advertising, and no corporate sponsorship but that charges for
entry.
Overall, social networking sites are experiencing hockey stick
growth and, in the process, influencing new types of two-way
brand experiences and community building on the web. Although
the approaches to monetization outlined here just scratch the
surface, revenue models abound. Any repository of personal data
and contact information on a large group of users (perhaps
better to call them “consumers”) inevitably translates to profit
opportunities.
Let’s just hope that all our email accounts and personal
profiles don’t end up in a spam database though a dot-com SNS
auction.

Phone cards are an excellent way to stay in touch with family and friends without ending up with an astronomical phone bill at the end of the month. But before you choose the phone card that seems to be the cheapest available, be sure you know all the details of how that particular phone card works.
Some phone card companies have a service charge for each call you make using the card. That means that you’ll lose several minutes each time you use the card – typically anywhere from four minutes to eight or even ten. If you have a phone card company touting their “three-cent a minute” rates, be sure of their service charges. If you’re also losing an additional ten minutes for every connection you make, the rates go up considerably.
One gimmick used by phone card companies is that they give you a price “per unit” instead of “per minute.” The significance is that there are different costs for different phone calls. You may pay only a penny or two per unit, but you may find that you’re being charged several units per minute. For example, if you pay two cents per unit and you’re phone call costs ten units per minute, you’re paying twenty cents a minute – significantly higher than the many reputable phone cards. Per unit cards may very well be a good deal, but find out how many units you can expect to pay for phone calls before you shell out the money for one of these cards.
Rechargeable phone cards are sometimes an excellent deal because the additional minutes you purchase are often cheaper than the original cost of the card. If you think about it, it’s fairly easy to see why. Instead of buying another pieces of plastic, you’re simply buying the service – less cost to the company.
Buying larger amounts is also typically a good way to get the best deal on a phone card. Companies typically offer a better price per minute if you purchase a card with two or more hours of calling time than for a card with only a half hour. Again, it’s a simple matter of marketing and you can see that the cost of producing the plastic card is a factor in that cost.
There’s no doubt that phone cards are a good way to stay in touch, especially in some situations. Taking time to choose a reliable company for your phone card purchase is an important step in being sure you make the best selection for your phone card company provider.

Practice attaching words to feelings requires time to do. Without a system that helps you monitor that time, the minutes or hours could feel unproductive. With the right exercise, you can then use that time wisely, as well as save you time and frustration.
Learning to apply the right words to our six senses is a top ingredient to the mixture of writing. Its language brings the reader into the story. All of us easily know how we feel, or what we’re seeing (okay, most of the time), what we’re hearing, smelling, tasting, and sensing, and can usually explain it in 50 words if pushed to do it. But, how do you describe it in one or two words without the pushing?
Also, by beginning with good material, the remaining part of the writing process becomes easier. This exercise will help you improve your beginning.
This is a simple exercise that you can do anywhere, anytime, in a space of minutes or longer. You can practice Monday mornings in the garden, the doctor’s waiting room, or in the lunchroom. It can last as long as a television commercial (oops those aren’t short any longer), or you more aggressively with a devoted 30-minutes a day. Whatever length of time or place you have, it will always improve your skill.
You will want to sit while completing this exercise.
Okay, let’s start with the most difficult spot, your supplies — paper and your writing instruments. Landscape, portrait, small, or regular size sheet of paper doesn’t matter. I define what paper size to use by the amount of time available and my location. If I’m mobile, I use my small journal. If I’m at my desk or at home, I use a regular size paper. Sometimes lines, sometimes not. Sometimes the exercise flows over to two or three sheets. Don’t limit the experience by paper size. Have fun with the recording tools as well. Experimentation is the key to our curiosity. And, curiosity is the foundation of a writer.
Draw a circle on the page and place your name in the center. Large, small, in color, black, or blue, again it doesn’t matter. Use whatever flips your pancakes at that moment. In other words, whatever feels good at the time.
Your objective is to describe your five senses, six if you have that gift, with words. Write the words that express that sense in the space inside the circle randomly around your name.
Here is how you would use this exercise to increase environment awareness and description. Write your words in the location on the paper relevant to the direction it appears. For example: I’m sitting outside my office on a 9th floor balcony at the moment, I hear a heavy humming from the tires on the wet pavement below and birds chirping above me to the right. I would place the words for the tires on the bottom left and the chirping on the upper right on my page.
Here are nine prompts to help you expand your experience. * Write words describing your atmosphere–the quality of air. * What are the clouds doing? Can you see animals in their shapes? * The temperature of your location. * The source of light and its quality. * Where are people standing or sitting? * Shadows, are they’re any? Where and how do they fall? * Predominant colors, wall colors, wallpaper, molding, chair railing, textured ceiling. * What do you smell? Using comparisons are a great way to relate to your reader. The air feels like just getting out of the fogged shower stall. * Are there other people around you? How do they smell, their clothes, their shoes? Guess at what they might do for a living. Are they dressed like someone on their way to work, doesn’t work, a mom, dad, baker, or what?
After you are comfortable describing your environment, spice the exercise up another notch. Compare your descriptive words to something else. For example: The room you are sitting in feels like a sauna with my clothes on.
Continue spicing up the exercise to increase your awareness and descriptive powers–use people and objects. Since you are most familiar with yourself, begin there.
After practicing on the most familiar subject, yourself, create a list of other familiar people in your life. Then sort the list from most familiar to least. Continue down the list. Somewhere during these lists and practice sessions, you will begin to feel comfortable with your skill.
You can continue taking the exercise to another level. This time you are ready to expand your awareness and adaptation to words. Visit the local mall; sit in the food court for smorgasbord of new enriching thoughts-to-words experiences.
Here are 11 prompts to help you expand your levels: * Describe what you are wearing. * How does your body feel? * What are your hands doing? * How does your throat feel? * How are you holding your mouth? * Eye movement * Breathing * How do you feel in general, in detail? * Name your mood. Does it have a flavor and color? * Describe your feelings with reference to music. A certain song or type of music. * How does your hair smell, clothes, the chair you’re sitting on, the book you’re reading?
Be patient with yourself while practicing. This exercise isn’t the easiest to complete, however, it is the most effective. Even if you aren’t a writer, this exercise will help you triple your awareness skills in a short time period1. This exercise also helps police officers, speakers, judges, attorneys, or anyone else that uses their awareness skills to see and put it into words. This is also a NLP–neurolinguistics programming skill–for those aware of this process.
