This season alpinist Anthony Loeff is reporting the scales for Mt Everest and Kilimanjaro in Tanzania

Travel Stuff, Sports Hall, Looking for Adventure

This season Anthony Loeff the French mountaineer is reporting the scales for Mount Everest after reaching the top of earlier this year.

Now that Min Bahadur Sherchan has successfully scaled the tallest mountain in the world, he is once again ready to focus on his family. “The Chinese weren’t allowing anybody on Mt Everest. They ended up commandeering it for themselves, even though Chomolungma is shared by two countries. Sherchan just 9 days away from his 77th birthday beat the age record set last year by 71-year-old Japanese teacher Katsusuke Yanagisawa.

The Chinese were flying their airplanes over the Mount Everest and had Chinese officials in Kathmandu. Climber from Nepal, 75, oldest man to scale Everest Hall was frostbitten and severely disoriented due to altitude sickness. Bahadur Sherchan returned a hero to Calgarians. However, he was all too aware of the potential dangers Chomolungma or Mount Everest could bring. Certain parts of the climb are more dangerous than others and it is important for climbers to remain focused They basically coerced the Nepali government to not allow any climbers past camp two on the Nepali side. More than 3229 people have climbed to the summit since it was first conquered in 1953 by New Zealander Edmund Hillary, who died in January, and Nepal’s Tenzing Norgay.

They flexed their muscles this year all the in name of the Olympic spirit, but it was hardly spirited at all.”

“Mount Everest this year became a political pawn,” he said with some frustration.

Andrew Brash returned this week from Nepal after successfully climbing to the summit of the Mount Everest. As he planned for the climb, Sherchan told reporters he wanted to inspire fellow senior citizens. He also said many Nepalese have established records on Chomolungma or Mount Everest, so it was only fitting that the record for the oldest climber to reach the summit should also belong to a Nepali. The 76-year-old man from Nepal is now the oldest person to have reached the top of Chomolungma. Indeed, the decision to actualize a long-time personal goal left Bahadur Sherchan with some internal uncertainties, he cited the political actions of China and Nepal as providing the greatest adversity he faced on his journey. Andrew Brash last attempt resulted in the rescue of Lincoln Hall, an Australian climber who was left by his team in the “death zone.”

His first found him within 166 metres of the peak when his team stopped to help a fellow mountaineer who was left for dead. later, Min Bahadur Sherchan, a University of Calgary alumni, returned to Everest to finish what he had started.

With the Chinese preparing for the impending summer Olympic Games, Bahadur Sherchan noted that the government’s actions hardly reflected the Olympic spirit. Andrew Brash and four climbing guides reached the 29,035-foot (8,850-meters) summit of the world’s highest mountain early Sunday, said Ramesh Chretri, an official with Nepal’s ministry of tourism.

This is the betting outfit’s fashion of offering level lays for a Sportsbook. As an example a customer may bet on a lineup that is expected to take a licking and and yet win the wager so long as the contestor does actually lose by a given number of points.

Keep Your Stats To Improve Your Golf Game

Sports Hall

If you are a “golf junkie” like I am, you are always looking for ways to improve your game, since you are reading this you probably fall into that category. One of the easiest ways to improve your golf game is to keep your stats. Let’s face it, if you are not trying to improve your game what’s the point? I often find myself playing golf with high handicap golfers ( not that there’s anything wrong with that), but I find it interesting that a lot of times they don’t keep their score. How can you expect to improve your game if you don’t keep score? Seniors are notorious for this, but senior golfers are on most occasions on a different agenda, a lot of senior golfers are just out for exercise and commodore, and God willing, I sure hope I make it that far. For the rest of us that are trying to play better golf, keeping stats on your game is a must.

Talk to most golfers on tour and they will tell you exactly where they stand in almost every category. The main reason for this is so they know exactly what they need to work on to improve their scoring average. At the 2006 U.S. Open Padraig Harrington finished 1 stroke behind Phil, Monty, and Jim Furyk for third place, the difference in his check was $245,000.00. If he cuts 1 stroke per day off his score he wins by 3 strokes. For the players on tour the meter is always running.

Keeping your stats also helps keep your focus throughout the round. Even if I am not playing well on a particular day, I still keep my stats, that helps me from “bailing” on the round. The best way to keep your stats is during the round, but if you don’t like doing it during the round, make sure you do it right after while the round is still fresh in you mind. . Before the round grab an extra scorecard.
Here are stats that you should keep:

Fairways Hit

Number of putts

3 putts

1 putts

Greens in regulation

Short of green

Over green

There are several golf statistics programs, the one I recommend is IntelliGolf. Once you have compiled your stats for a few rounds you will be surprised to see patterns in your game. Now all you have to do is focus your practice sessions on your weaknesses. If your intention is to play better golf, keeping your stats is where to start.

2006 NFL Draft: The Reggie Bush Sweepstakes

Sports Hall

While it’s still quite a few months before the NFL Draft, with the regular season winding down, it’s a good time as any to take a glance at the teams who are “competing’ for the league’s worst record and the right to draft the lone “can’t miss” college player, USC running back/receiver/kick return specialist Reggie Bush.

If you weren’t convinced of this kid’s potential at the beginning of the college football year, after watching him blow by defenses in 2004, after watching his last two games against Fresno State and UCLA, you have to be convinced now, right??

Current favorite: The Houston Texans

They’ll be a few changes here, especially in the coaching department, as Dom Capers and his staff will either be shown the door at the end of the season, or sooner. David Carr was supposed to develop into the franchise QB by now, but we really don’t know how good he is because of the lack of talent around him. The Texans management still believe he has potential, so they won’t be drafting his replacement in 2006.

Bush would give the team at least a watch-able player, something they don’t have at the moment. Not sure about you, but Domanick Davis doesn’t exactly get the juices flowing.

The San Francisco 49ers

This may be the best scenario for the the San Diego native, since the hometown Chargers won’t pick til late in the 1st round. Also, he and last year’s #1 pick Alex Smith were teammates at Helix High. near San Diego.

The 49ers were once a proud organization, and with a underrated coach like Mike Nolan at the helm, all he needs are a few difference-makers, which Bush definitely is. Interesting enough, the Niners face the Texans in week 17, possibly with the USC star as the prize for the loser.

I knew Direct TV offered Sunday Ticket for some reason.

New York Jets

With the team having so much uncertainty about thir current quarterback situation, namely the health of Chad Pennington, Matt Leinart may be the more helpful choice. The Jets still have Curtis Martin in the backfield, and he can still run despite his age by evidenced by his rushing title in 2004.

And with Eli Manning starring for the cross-town Giants, the Jets would also love to have a marquee signal-caller. But could they really pass on Bush??

Green Bay Packers

Brett Favre probably won’t allow the Pack to finish with the league’s worst record, especially with the Lions and Ravens remaining on the schedule. Who even knows yet if he’ll be back next year, as it’s pretty much assured that head coach Mike Sherman is a goner.

And the team certainly won’t draft another QB, since Aaron Rodgers is the future, I guess? If Favre returns for another year or two, he may never see the field.

The health of Ahman Green is also an issue, so Bush would be the perfect fit for GB. He’d also give Favre a dump-off guy, so hopefully he won’t continue to throw into coverage. But old habits are hard to break, especially 14 year old habits.

Scuba Diving Vacation

Sports Hall, Having Fun, Looking for Adventure

If you are a new diver you’ll want to make sure that your scuba diving vacation destination offers beginner courses. The hotspot should offer classes that allow you to learn to dive in open water with no decompression. You’ll also want to check out the prices of the classes and any additional fees for renting scuba diving gear. Check the vacation spot’s website or call for more information. You will probably need to get a form filled out by a doctor in order to take the classes. The form simple confirms that you are capable and fit enough to scuba dive.

When planning your perfect scuba diving vacation you’ll want to determine how you are going to be able to reach the location. Some spots can only be reached by plane or boat. If this is the case with your destination you’ll want to check out the prices and fees for admission. Obviously, you will need to find some suitable lodging. Some of the vacation spots offer lodging at expensive prices. If you would rather find a cheaper motel elsewhere you should plan reservations ahead of time. During certain times of the year it will be difficult to find available lodging.

Bowhunting Talk

Sports Hall

In the sport of archery and bowhunting, choosing your method of hunting starts with the selection of the type of bow you are about to use. If you are selecting either the long bow or recurve bow you are about to enter the traditional bowhunting world. Or you may choose the compound bow for your choice of weapon. Whichever choice you make, just remember we are all bowhunters and we all enjoy the sport of archery. Bowhunting can and should be a family oriented way to bond together. My Dad always said, “When you hunt with your children, you don’t have to hunt for your children.”

Now that brings me to the equipment and how to choose a bow for the choice of the hunt. I am glad the compound bow is here. The compound has allowed many people to stay in the sport. I have had too many friends or relatives that have lost the strength of their youth and can no longer pull back the heavy draw of a long bow or recurve bow. Would you tell your wife or kids they can’t hunt until they can pull a 65 lb. bow back? No, I didn’t think so. That just wouldn’t be fair!

I’d much rather see a person using equipment that they can handle and be able to shoot effectively, rather then having someone shooting a bow that they are not comfortable with and possibly wounding an animal during a hunt. Whatever you feel comfortable with, will always be the right choice for you or your hunting partners. By this I mean, try not to pressure someone into something that may not be the right comfort zone for that particular person just because it works for you. You should only make a suggestion to try and help someone. And don’t be afraid or too stubborn to take a suggestion from someone else. I am always looking for a good opportunity to learn a better way of doing anything in life and its many paths that it has to offer.

This brings me to another thought in my mind. I’ve been to the practice range when either an anti-hunter or maybe a gun hunter asks me what are you doing with that thing (meaning my compound bow). Don’t you think you bowhunters have wounded enough animals? This is very unfair for either to say. Anti-hunters will never understand how the true meaning of fair chase rules work and why conservation by the hunter works so well for our great country. I’ve also had gun hunters say to me, I’ve seen way too many deer running around in the woods with arrows sticking out of them. I’m here to tell you that in my forty years plus of hunting with a gun or my archery equipment, I’ve never seen one deer running around with arrows stuck in it. It’s time to stop pointing fingers. I have seen deer that have been mortally wounded by either a gun or bow and I don’t think I could point a finger without saying, someone made a poor choice of a shot or they just didn’t follow through with a good tracking of a blood trail.

It is time we stop pointing fingers and band together as one. The hunter, whether it is archery hunting or gun hunting, we need to stick together and help each other to conserve our rights to hunt and give fair chase to the animal being pursued.

A Bow Hunter Is…
A creature with stick and string attached.

One who smiles while water runs down his backbut complains if his feathers get wet.

A stickler for perfection in equipmentwho is wearing baggy pants.

Someone with a talent to top the biggest tale you ever heardor told.

A Hunter with a thirst for challenge.

One who screams bloody murder if the meals are not on timebut will wait for hours in one spot just to get snorted at.

A hunter wearing camouflage clothes and a MBH (Michigan Bow Hunters) emblem!

This was a quote out of the Michigan Bow Hunters news letter, December, 1983. I thought this was quite fitting for this article about archery and bow hunting.
It’s All About Bow Hunting!

My name is Ted Lake and I’m building a website in memory of my dad Deuaine Lake. This site is all about Archery and Archery Hunting. McCarthy a brutal hire for the Packers!

Sports Hall

Sometimes I just don’t get it !!!

As offensive coordinator for the San Francisco 49ers last year,
Mike McCarthy’s offense finished 32nd and dead last in the NFL.
How bad was it ??? That offense finished 32nd in passing, 22nd
in rushing, and was 30th overal in points going eight games of a
sixteen game schedule without an offensive touchdown.

As quarterback coach of the Packers during Ray Rhodes
short-lived and ill-fated 1999 regime, McCarthy guided Bret
Favre to his second worst season as a professional with the
future HOFer throwing 24 pics to just 23 touchdowns. Favre’s
74.7 QB rating was was only supraceeded by his 1993 sopomore
season rating of 72.2 and this year’s train-wreck of 70.9 yet
this week Mike McCarthy was brought back to Green Bay and hired
as the 14th Head Coach in arguably the most storied franchise in
NFL history.

The Packers had to know that this was a controversial hire as
the McCarthy news conference seemed to be more of a damage
control preemptive rather than a celebration of the man that was
going to restore tarnished lustre and return Green Bay to the
promised land.

McCarthy was lauded for his past accomplishments, particularly
his work with the Saints spanning 2000-2004. During that time,
the Saints established 25 team and 10 individual marks. Joe Horn
who caught 437 passes for 6289 yards and 45 TD’s during
McCarthy’s tenure. New Orleans led the NFL in points (432) and
toucdowns (49) during the 2002 season.

McCarthy’s prior work with the Kansas City was also cited. As
quarterback coach of the Chiefs between ‘95-’98, the combo of
Gannon, Grbac, and Bono threw an AFC low 52 interceptions over
that four year period. Huh ??? Whupdidoo !!!

In his year with Favre, Bret did throw for 4,091 yards but the
Packers were just seventh in passing and ninth overall in total
offense.

At the press conference it was also brought up that McCarthy had
spent most of last year mentoring the leagues first overall
draft pick, Alex Smith - possibly an inference that Aaron
Rodgers would be in good hands if Favre decides to call it a
career.

Alex Smith’s season by any standards was an unmitigated
disaster! Smith’s numbers were horrific - 84-165 (50.9%) for 875
yards and a 1/11 TD/INT ratio. Granted, Smith had little to work
but based on his freshman year, he’s well on his way to becoming
a bust in the proportions of Tony Mandrich and Ryan Leaf.

McCarthy becomes the youngest coach in the NFL, three months
younger than John Gruden. He inherits a a young (26.04 years at
season end, 3d in NFL) team that is filled with uncertainties
like the health of Javon Walker and Ahman Green and the return
of Brett Favre.

Mike McCarthy was a surprisingly desperate hire from a
surprisingly desperate franchise. The Packers had been to the
playoffs five of the six years under Mike Sherman and while the
talent level of the team has fallen appreciably due primarily to
poor drafts, the whole Packer post-season shakeup wreaks of
panic!

McCarthy’s coaching background:

1987-88, Fort Hays State - Graduate Assistant 1989-91, Univ. of
Pittsburgh - Quarterbacks 1992, Univ. of Pittsburgh - Wide
Receivers 1993-94, Kansas City Chiefs - Offensive
Assistant/Quality Control 1995-98, Kansas City Chiefs -
Quarterbacks 1999, Green Bay Packers - Quarterbacks 2000-04, New
Orleans Saints - Offensive Coordinator 2005, San Francisco 49ers
- Offensive Coordinator 2006, Green Bay Packers - Head Coach

Running for Beginners: The Running Tip, A to Z

Sports Hall

Here’s a Running Tip for each letter of the alphabet!

Follow these, and you’ll be a wiser runner!

Ask questions.

Never stop learning. There are no stupid questions. Contact us at http://www.ordinaryrunner.com/.

Balance.

Running is not all there is to life. Keep family, friends, and faith!

Carry a bandana!

Fold it over your waistband. Good for wiping sweat, and wiping other places in the event of a detour into the woods in the event of a sudden attack of Runner’s Trots.

Diet wisdom!

60% carbohydrates, 25% fat, 15% protein. A high fat diet will destroy your ability to run.

Exercise your right to run!

There is freedom in covering ground under your own power. Appreciate it!

Fun!

That’s what being an Ordinary Runner is all about!

Go racing!

Getting ready for a race is one of the most motivating aspects of running.

Hydration.

Drink, drink, drink. Your body is mostly water! Keep it that way!

Increase mileage slowly.

When you’re adding mileage, never increase more than 10% a week. This helps to avoid injury.

Just keep moving!

This is the theme song of the Ordinary Runner. We may not be the fastest or sleekest, but we keep moving forward.

Keep a journal.

You’ll be amazed what you’ll learn about yourself, and how quickly you learn what works and what doesn’t work… just by writing it down.

Limping is bad.

If something is hurting bad enough to make you change your stride, you need to rest. Remember RICE: Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation.

Make friends!

Some of your best friends will be people you meet at races or training groups.

Notice the world around you.

Don’t develop the bad habit of simply watching the ground in front of your shoes. Don’t forget to look around and see the world while you’re running!

Only for running!

Only wear your running shoes to run in, not to wear around during the day. You’ve got to keep those midsoles springy! This avoids injury.

Pounds!

Watch the pounds come off! If you just keep moving and stay consistent in your running, you WILL lose weight!

Quilt frequently.

Just seeing if you’re still paying attention. (I bet you think of a running tip that started with a “Q”!)

Rotate shoes.

Use 2 pairs of shoes to keep the midsoles fresh. Use the shoe with lower miles for longer runs, and the high mileage shoe for shorter ones. This avoids injuries.

Shoes!

They are your MOST IMPORTANT piece of equipment. Buy quality, and take care of them. I can’t stress this enough. Quality shoes are a must!

Trim your toenails.

Long toenails are a surefire way to get “black toe.” (That’s when your toenail turns solid black from pounding on the end of your shoe!)

Use a heart rate monitor.

Not only will you learn quickly about your heart rate info, but you’ll have a lot of fun. A great piece of technology!

Vacation!

Yes, you need a vacation occasionally, even from running. A week long break once a year will do wonders for your muscles AND your mind.

Wicking materials!

Especially your socks! Keeping sweat away from your feet avoids blisters and Athlete’s Foot. Keeping it away from your torso avoids getting too hot in summer, and too cold in winter.

X-Ray it!

If an injury keeps you from running, and persists, see a doctor! You don’t want to develop a stress fracture!

Yikes! Don’t run from dogs.

Face a dog, make yourself as big as you can, use a big voice. Back away slowly until he loses interest. If he doesn’t lose interest, zig when he zags!

Zero calories in liquids.

We’ve talked about it before. If you’re trying to lose weight in general, or training for a race, this is one of the quickest ways to lose it! Don’t drink anything that has calories!

And that’s the Running Tip, from A to Z!

Kely Braswell has been a runner for 27 years. He’s not the fastest… just an Ordinary Runner. But he stays in shape, and he knows a lot about running! Beginning runners can look at http://www.ordinaryrunner.com/, simple advice on running for beginners and mere mortals!

Take a Hiking Pole on Your Next Hike

Sports Hall

Take a Hiking Pole on Your Next Hike

It is the downhill ski racing competition of the winter
Olympics. You watch a ski racer zoom down the slope manoeuvring
through the ski gates. However, you notice that something is
missing. The skier has on skis, boots, and a giant slalom skin
tight racing suit. You realize what’s missing when their arms
flail about causing them to lose their balance on a patch of
ice. They are missing their ski poles.

It is the cross country skiing competition of the winter
Olympics. You cheer from the crowd as the skiers fly down the
trail. Each skier pushes hard with their ski poles. However, one
skier is left far behind the pack because he does not have any
ski poles. His graceful cross country rhythm has been
interrupted due to a lack of balance.

In both cases, the skiers lost the race because they were
missing their ski poles. Ski poles are vital because they help
maintain balance, provide support, and relieve some of the
pressure off your body. If the use of a ski pole is so crucial,
then why is it that many hikers do not use a hiking pole during
their hikes?

You might not think of a hiking or trekking pole as a necessity
until you compare hiking to cross country skiing. In hiking you
traverse across a terrain of varying degrees and obstacles.
There is constant stress and strain on your muscles and joints
as you navigate through rocks, sandy areas, and elevated
terrain. Your knees and lower back are constantly adjusting to
the pressure placed on them. This can lead to soreness and pain.
This is comparable to the demands of cross country skiing.

Hiking pain can be reduced by investing in a hiking or trekking
pole. Hiking poles have a wide range of benefits including:
improved balance, endurance, and ward off knee injuries. Hiking
poles can enable you to successfully cross streams and work
through steeper terrain. A mental side effect is that they can
boost your confidence allowing you tackle the hiking trail with
vigor.

There are different types of hiking and trekking poles
available. There are long wooden poles, shorter aluminum poles,
snow poles, and ice axes. Want to beef up your regular hiking
pole? Hiking poles have various accessories to choose from
including: hand grips, shock absorbers, and camera mounts. If
you are going on a winter hike you can add a basket to your
pole. Another important aspect of your hiking pole is its tip.
The common tip is made of carbide. However, rubber tips are also
available. Each tip has pros and cons which should be considered
when purchasing a pole. Consult a hiking professional to assess
which pole is best for you.

If you want more stability and less stress on your body consider
investing in a hiking or trekking pole. The ability to navigate
through difficult terrain will become a reality. Hiking poles
can cost money, but they are worth every penny.

How to Unleash Your True Golf Potential (Part 1)

Sports Hall

Time and time again we see today’s golfers out on the driving range trying to better their game. Whether it’s working their short game or driving the long ball, hours upon hours are spent on trying to master proper technique in order to take strokes off their game. What most golfers are unaware of is that the proper technique they are striving for is often hampered by something call muscle imbalance. Muscle imbalances are postural deficiencies that will cause faulty movement patterns, discomfort or even pain during activities such as a golf swing.

Muscle imbalances can be caused by many other factors besides golf, for example sedentary lifestyle, occupation, and injury just to name a few. Repetitive movements such as a golf swing can cause muscles on one side of the body to tighten while the apposing muscles become weak and lengthened. This will often result in the loss of power and accuracy in a golfers swing. For a golfer to achieve his or her true potential, one must correct these imbalances that are hampering their ability to perform proper technique.

Muscle balance can be achieved through a method of exercise called Corrective Exercise. This type of exercise program focus’ on identifying and correcting both tight (short) muscles and lengthened (weak) muscles through a series of strengthening and flexibility exercises. Achieving muscle balance will result in a strong balanced posture and allow the body to perform at an optimal performance level (increased power and accuracy).

When hiring a fitness professional to improve your golf game ask them if they are experienced on the topic of corrective exercise. A complete evaluation should be performed to identify your areas of need.

In Part 2 of this article, I will discuss the common muscle imbalances associated with the game of golf and the exercise techniques needed to correct them.
