Soy Milk May be Tied to Infant Deaths

The Healthy Way

Although the autopsy is inconclusive and tests on the food are not yet complete, a porridge made of EdenSoy Extra soy milk and cornmeal may be responsible for the deaths of two infant brothers living in Brooklyn.

When their mother attempted to wake them, shortly after noon, she found they were unconscious and took them to the hospital. Both were pronounced dead on arrival.

Initial thoughts were that the twins had been overcome by a gas leak, but tests showed no leak.

Because medical examiners also found no evidence of choking as a result of consuming the food, or any signs of foul play, the police instead began focusing on what the infants had eaten. The police cleaned out two nearby supermarkets of EdenSoy milk and cornmeal for testing.

Dr. Mercola’s Comment:If you ever wondered why I’m so concerned about the health dangers tied to the rampant use of soy products — especially in processed foods — this kind of incident is exactly the reason. In my view there just simply isn’t any justification to ever use soy formula or worse, soy milk, in infants.

This isn’t the first time soy milk has been investigated for its toxic side effects. Separate incidents in California and Arkansas prompted the FDA to issue a 1990 warning against using soy milk as a formula substitute. Most brands have followed the tougher FDA labeling guidelines, except EdenSoy, says Dr. Kaayla T. Daniel, author of The Whole Soy Story: The Dark Side of America’s Favorite Health Food.

In fact, the deaths of three infants prompted the Israeli Health Ministry to issue a health advisory earlier this year, recommending babies not be fed soy formula — except as a last resort — and severely limiting a child’s intake of soy products.

Without question the best food you can give your infant is breast milk and this should be your primary choice if at all possible, as it is the healthiest source of milk you can give to your infant. I believe very strongly all soy formula should be avoided andis not fit for human consumption.

If breastfeeding is not an option, the best article I ever read on the topicis one published in a recent edition of the Weston Price ogranization. I am on their board and was able to obtain reprint rightsfor their article onhealthy alternatives to breast milk and commercial formula from Sally Fallon to run it in our newsletter. I would strongly encourage you to review thismulti-part series in this issueif you are unable to breastfeed.

When making the alterntaive to breast milk described in the article, ideally, it would be best to use raw milk as the base (other ingredients to add are described in the article). The best way toget it is tofind a local dairy farmer in your areathrough your local health food store orthe Real Milk Web site. Raw milk is a safer and farhealthier alternative to pasteurized milk.

Should We Be Concerned? What are the Trends of Asthma?

The Healthy Way

Globally, the trends of asthma is that it continues to escalate with more than 300 million people around the world suffering from asthma. In many countries the annual asthma death toll rises year in, year out.

Although asthma affects people of all ages, it often starts in childhood and is more common in children than adults. More boys have asthma than girls, but in adulthood more women have asthma than men.

Although asthma is a problem among all races, blacks have more asthma attacks and are more likely than whites to be hospitalised for asthma attacks or to die from asthma.

Trends of Asthma in the USA

There is an estimated 23.2 million people that suffer from asthma in the USA, and more than 30% of those are children 0 - 18 years of age.

Asthma is the biggest cause of school absensces in regards to chronic illnesses.

Asthma is the reason for nearly 500,000 hospitalisations and 5,000 deaths each year.

Health care costs related to asthma are more than $14 billion annually.

All statistic related to asthma, health care cost, newly diagnosed people and deaths because of asthma continues to increase yearly.

Trends of Asthma in Britian

Just over 5 million people have asthma. Meaning that 1 in 10 children and 1 in 12 adults. Each year 1,400 people die from asthma, and over a third of these deaths are in people under 65 years of age.

Each year there are 69,000 hospital admissions due to asthma, which includes about 28,500 children.

Approximately 1.2 million people with asthma experience significant restrictions on their daily lives, while 250,000 people have asthma which is so severe that it cannot be controlled by inhalers or stronger medicine.

Asthma treatment costs the NHS (National Health Service) an estimated £889 million a year.

However, too few asthmatics get the right information from their doctor when their asthma is diagnosed - only 6% receive a written self-management plan that explains when to take their medication and only 3% are told what to do when their asthma gets worse.

In a survey of 13-14 year olds in 56 countries, the UK had the fifth highest prevalence rate for asthma.

Trends of Asthma in Australia

Over two million people in Australia have asthma.

While asthma is on the increase, asthma deaths have been steadily declining for the past decade.

It is widely accepted that Australia has some of the best, and most affordable, medications available and are recognised as world leaders when it comes to asthma management and education, largely due to the intensive work of the National Asthma Council.

Summary of the Trends and Statistics

Asthma is a highly ranked chronic health condition in adults in most western countries, and it is the leading chronic illness of children. Asthma rates are on the increase, especially in the western world.

More people in western countries suffer from allergies, compared to people in less affluent rural parts of the world, and allergy rates are also on the increase.

Food Is My Friend

The Healthy Way

I began to discover food as the source of life at the age of 12. It was a love/ hate relationship. I hated to eat because I was afraid of becoming fat and yet I had to eat because if I didn’t I would get dizzy and get into fights with those who supposedly cared about me.

This struggle continued from the age of 12 until the age of 32.

I decided that the only way to get over it was to do more. I would show everyone that I was strong and that I could do anything. As I continued to do great things for others, I felt good but then that good feeling went away and I was miserable and alone. I had to decide “do I eat or not eat’?

When I didn’t eat I felt lighter but I also got dizzy and felt out of it. When I ate -I picked at my food and ended up eating junk later and slept it off. I never knew who was really my friend because there were so many people who treated me badly, teased me, I felt as though my life was a joke.

There were points when I decided that I could kick this -I was determined. I realized how miserable I was and decided that I had to do something to change that -so I discovered that when I did new and adventurous things I got my excitement and life back. After a while though, the misery came back so I found somewhere else to go.

There were many times when I seriously thought I was going crazy. There were times when my friends thought I was suicidal. I decided that it was not safe to share feelings with others because I will get into trouble if I did.

When I sought help I was told that I was “perfect”, that it was “all in my head” or that everyone goes through that. Just eat from all the food groups.

Finally at the age of 31 I was living alone -what a blessing -no one to watch over me, I could do what I wanted. This time I would be fine -I promised myself. Yet, after overeating and bingeing on a box of little Debbie’s and ice cream or a half a box of cereal I would run to the cupboard for laxatives. I would pray -Dear God, if you get me through this I promise I will never to do it again. How many times did I break that promise?

My ways of gaining control were not working. I would buy entire bags of binge foods, take them home and throw them away. I would attempt to make myself throw up and yet I couldn’t. There are so many others that can do this better. I am such a wuss.

If people really knew how much pain I was in they would freak out. That is one of the main reasons I could never go through with killing myself. I was afraid of what other people would think of me. Then on the other hand I would think about everything I wanted to do in my life. And the fact that I am so afraid of dying, death and life. Life would be so much better with out food and feelings and having friends because then they wouldn’t worry about me and I wouldn’t feel guilty about letting them down. There was no escape now -isolated in my living room dreading my life. I had to do something …

Mary Pat got the help she needed and continues her journey of recovery, one day at a time. She wants to use her life to help others find theirs. Remember - You are not alone.

Select your favorite Tea product from Alvita Teas

The Healthy Way

About Alvita
Teas:

It was 1922. A time of flagpole sitting and dance marathons. In
other words, the Roaring Twenties. But in Pasadena,California,
the only roar to be heard was that of boiling water rushing into
a cup of herbal Alvita Teas.

You see, the Alvita Tea Company was brewed into existence in
Pasadena seventy-five years ago. We were a small company back
then, spreading the herbal Alvita Teas
gospel in an era when Americans were more interested in martinis
than mullein.

Today, a full three-quarters of a century later, we take pride
in the fact that we have played some small role in introducing
Americans to the richness and wonders of herbal Alvita Teas.
Millions of Americans have made herbal Alvita Teas a
part of their lives, turning to them for good taste, comfort and
relaxation.

Now, Alvita has introduced an entirely new line of Alvita Teas.
It’s called Remeteas, a portfolio of ancient and modern blends
culled from the four corners of the tea-producing globe. Each
Remetea has a very specific mission- to help support our body
and soul, addressing the ills that afflict mankind and womankind.

There are some Top Alvita Teas:

Alfalfa Leaf Tea by Alvita Teas

One of nature’s oldest legumes, Alfalfa (Medicago sativa) is
known to be cultivated for over 2000 years. However, unlike most
legumes, where only the seed is consumed, the entire Alfalfa
plant (leaves, sprouts and seeds) is eaten by man. The Arabs,
centuries ago, used Alfalfa as feed for their horses and claimed
swift and strong. When they tried the herb themselves, they
became so convinced of its benefits to their health and strength
that they named the grass Al-Fac-Facah , meaning Father of All
Foods . The Spanish later changed the name to Alfalfa. The roots
of the Alfalfa plant burrow deep into the earth to reach
minerals that are inaccessible to other plants. Alfalfa
naturally contains a variety of vitamins, minerals and enzymes.

Bilberry Tea by Alvita Teas

small branched shrub found mainly in moors, humus rich- soil and
open woods from low-lands to mountains, Bilberry (vaccinium
myrtillus) bears small blue-black, many seeded berries. Also
commonly known as whortleberry, Bilberry has been a source of
fresh jam for hundreds of years. Extensively written about in
16th century herbals, this berry is native to northern Europe
and Asia; with its nearest American counterpart being the
huckleberry. During Word War II, Royal air force pilots swore
that eating Bilberry jam prior to night missions significantly
improved their visual acuity in the darkness.

Ginger Root Teaby Alvita Teas

Ginger (Zingiber officinale) is a tropical perennial that grows
from an aromatic, tuberous rhizome that is knotty shaped and
buff colored. The name Ginger is derived from the Sanskrit
gringa or horn and vera meaning body, in reference to the shape
of the root. Ginger has a recorded history of use in China
dating from the 4th century B.C. Used for hundreds of years as a
spice for cooking, Ginger is also used for it’s soothing
properties. Ginger is available fresh, dried ground, and in
dried pieces. It can be added to beverages, fruits, salads,
meats, poultry, vegetables and is a favorite in stir-fry
cooking. Combined with onions and garlic, it adds an agreeable
warming flavor to any main entrée.

Are There Hormones in Your Whey Protein?

The Healthy Way

One question that has popped up a few times in my email in box
relates to the issue of hormones in whey protein supplements.
Are there hormones in your whey? It?s not a simple “yes” or “no”
answer I am sorry to say, but the short answer is, people have
nothing to fear.

Being an animal based product derived from milk, whey, like any
animal based product, could potentially contain some naturally
occurring hormone(s). The issue is, which hormone and in what
amounts?

Modern testing abilities being as sensitive as they are today,
being able to search for things in parts per million (ppm),
parts per billion (ppb) or even parts per trillion (ppt) in some
cases, some hormone of some kind can be found in virtually
anything we humans ingest, especially if it is derived from an
animal source (though plants also often contain some naturally
occurring hormones or hormone-like compounds).

So what’s the scoop on whey? The major concern seems to revolve
around:

Steroid based sex hormones (e.g., testosterone, etc.) Growth
hormones and or growth factors (e.g., IGF-1, bovine growth
hormone or bovine somatotropin, etc) Non-hormonal compounds such
as anti biotic contamination. I will attempt to address those in
particular to clear up any fears or confusion over the matter.

Are there any steroids in your whey?

Steroid hormones being highly lipophilic (soluble in fat) will
be found in the lipid (fat) portion of whey, or any milk based
product for that matter. Any high grade whey isolate (WPI) is
essentially fat free (read my article “The Whey it is” to
understand the differences in the types and quality of whey
proteins in back issues of Muscular Development or at my web
site at: http://www.brinkzone.com/wheyitis.html).

For example, CFM isolate contains less than one tenth of one
gram of actual dairy fat per 20 gram (20,000 milligrams)
serving, which is approximately one standard scoop found in most
products.

The additional fat listed on the can of most whey isolate
products generally comes from the addition of small amounts of
lecithin, which is not an animal based lipid, and or the
flavoring system being employed. An ion exchange whey - though
not an optimal whey protein in my opinion as explained in “The
Whey it is” - will contain even less fat.

So, the reality is sex hormone levels in the lipid portion of
milk fat and or fat in whey is so low as to be either non
-testable or virtually non testable. Add to that fact that whey
isolates are virtually fat free, and it’s easy to see this is a
non-issue.

Are there any growth hormones in your whey?

As for growth hormone(s) such as bovine somatotropin (BST) and
IGF-1, etc., that’s a bit more complicated. Growth factor
hormones (e.g., BST, IGF-1, etc.) are protein based hormones
(versus steroid based hormones discussed in the previous
section) and thus, can be found in the protein fraction of
animal based products, such as muscle, milk, etc.

However, we will keep the discussion of these hormones specific
to whey as that’s what this article is about right? Milk, and
thus whey protein, does contain minute amount of BST.

BST is simply the bovine (cow) form of growth hormone cows
produce naturally. In humans, it’s called Human Growth Hormone
(HGH), which is produced in the pituitary gland and is also a
popular anti aging drug many people are using to fight the
effects of aging.

However, and this is the essential point, BST is not found in
higher levels then would be found if the animals were not
treated with BST. That is, whether they treat the animals with
BST or not, they find the BST levels in milk to be found in
minute amounts and in the normal “background” levels.

What are the levels of BST found in milk? It ranges from
approximately zero - ten parts per billion (PPB) and typical
level found in milk is 3ppb. That translates into approximately
1 mcg (one millionth of a gram) per liter. That ladies and gents
is what we call a truly miniscule amount.

To add to the above, protein based hormones such as
BST-naturally occurring or otherwise - are quite delicate and
digestion of these proteins means they are destroyed when
ingested. To sum up, I consider the risk from BST to be again, a
non-issue. Don?t forget, the issue has been looked at
extensively by the scientific community.

For example:

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) looking at this issue
stated “The composition and nutritional values of milk from
bST-supplemented cows is essentially the same as milk from
untreated cows… (M)eat and milk from rbST-treated cows are as
safe as that from untreated cows.” (NIH Technology Assessment
Conference Statement on Bovine somatotropin. JAMA.
1991:265:1423-1425).

The Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) said on
the issue “The FDA has answered all questions and concerns about
the safety of milk from bST-supplemented cows…” (JAMA.
1990:264:1003-1005). The journal Science stated “The data
evaluated by the FDA documented the safety of food products from
animals treated with rbGH.” (Bovine Growth Hormone: Human Food
Safety Evaluation. Science. 1990:249:875-884.).

Yes folks, no matter what hysterical issues some people have
tried to raise with BST, the data and the facts simply does not
support the hysteria. It’s a non-issue to human health. However,
and it should be noted, that may not be the case for the cows
themselves, just as large amounts of HGH can be problematic for
humans, and that issue is currently being evaluated.

They may stop giving cows BST due to the health issues it
presents to cows, but not due to any health issues to humans. So
read my lips here gang, it won’t matter if the milk is taken
from “organic” non BST treated cows or not, the BST levels
appear to remain the same and are (a) found in miniscule amounts
and (b) in all probability are destroyed during digestion.

Yes, there can differences in the amounts of some compounds
(pesticide for example) between some organic foods (e.g., fruits
and vegetables) and non-organic foods, but BST simply is not one
of them.

As for Insulin-like growth factor one (IGF-1) that’s more
interesting and relevant, though it still appears to be a non
issue to human health. Different whey product will have varying
levels of IGF-1 depending on many variables such as: whether
it?s a concentrate (WPC) or an Isolate (WPI), how it’s produced,
and even what time of the year the milk is taken from the cows,
and so on.

So, I can’t give the levels for every form and type of whey (see
aforementioned article above “The Whey it is” to understand
different types of whey).

As an example (cause I have the numbers handy on my desk and
it’s the form of whey I personally use!), CFM isolates have
approximately 35 micrograms (mcg) of IGF per 100g of powder
(recall standard scoop is 20g).

Remember, we are not talking gram amounts here but micrograms,
which is one millionth of a gram! 35 micrograms could not even
be seen by the human eye. Could there be any negative
physiological effects to consuming this amount of IGF-1?

Add to the reality how unstable and sensitive to digestion
protein based hormones are, it’s highly unlikely. Being a
well-known anabolic/anti catabolic hormone, I bet most
bodybuilders wished the levels of IGF-1 in whey where much
higher!

{Side note: there is a whey product known as Bioactive Whey
Fraction (BAWF) protein that has bumped up levels of IGF-1 and
other growth factors that should be on the market shortly. Read
“The Whey it is” for more info on that if interested.}

Recall that IGF-1 was made a bit of a boogieman hormone when a
link (correlation) was found between IGF-1 levels and prostate
cancer. However, that association was not found in later studies
and any cause and effect relationship between the two is fuzzy
at best, and even contradictory according to some studies.

For example, some doctors find that PSA levels (used as a
predictor of prostate cancer) often drops when giving older men
growth hormone (which increase IGF-1 levels) which is not what
one would expect to find if IGF-1 was a cause of prostate cancer
nor is IGF-1 levels correlated to PSA levels.

Of course being a growth factor, able stimulate cell division
and cell differentiation, it has been theorized that like other
growth factors (e.g., GH, epidermal, transforming, platelet
derived, fibroblast, nerve, and ciliary neurotrophic growth
factors and others) IGF-1 could stimulate the growth of some
cancers.

This is far from proven however and far far more complicated
then it appears on the surface. For example, IGF-1 levels, as
well as GH, are intimately connected the immune system, and have
a wide range of essential effects on the body, such as keeping
bodyfat levels low and muscle mass levels up, bone formation,
and 1000 other effects. So, painting IGF-1 as a bad guy hormone
is both unscientific and simply incorrect.

Would a person with a hormone dependent liver cancer want to
inject (versus eat) large amounts of IGF-1 or GH? Probably not,
but even that is unclear at this time.

Let’s not forget the incidence of prostate cancer increases with
age in men but blood levels of IGF-1 and GH decline
significantly with age.

The etiology of prostate cancer is a highly complex, and not
fully understood interaction between diet, genetics, an
inflammatory process, and hormones such as testosterone, DHT,
estradiol, and other physiological variables and hormones both
known and yet unknown.

The bottom line here is, microgram amounts of IGF-1 found in
whey poses minimal (because no thing on earth we eat poses zero
risk!) to a non-existent risk, and may even help us in some
ways.

For example, IGF-1 has been shown to improve some
gastrointestinal diseases and pathology, reduces muscle loss
during certain disease states and other beneficial effects.

It’s also essential to remember from the many articles that have
been published on whey (written predominantly by yours truly)
that whey has been studied extensively for it’s effects on
cancer specifically, and across the board has been found to
prevent various forms of cancer in animals (with human data
strongly suggesting the same effects in people), improve
immunity, and other positive effects, such as possibly improve
performance and treat over training syndrome (OTS) in athletes.

Thus, it’s clear any increased risks from ingesting miniscule
amounts of IGF-1 found in whey - if there are any at all - are
offset by the many positive health effects of this well studied
protein.

Are there any anti biotics in whey?

Finally, we can address the possibility of any contamination
from the anti-biotics given to the cows that may find it’s way
into the milk and then the whey.

Several studies have found that in a small number of cases
anti-biotic residues could be detected in commercial milk. This
has caused some people to use organic non-treated milk.

Having done extensive consulting work in the whey industry, I
can tell you all major manufacturers of whey protein powders
test constantly for anti biotic residues, as the milk industry
in general does.

The major whey manufacturers I have worked with test every
single batch of incoming milk for anti-biotic residues and
reject any batch that finds any amount, no matter how small.
Only milk that gets an ND (non detectable) stamp of approval
after testing is used to produce the whey.

Thus, there are no anti biotic residues in your whey
supplements. I can?t personally vouch for all whey manufacturers
as I have not done consulting work for all whey manufacturers,
but the handful I have worked with had an extreme level of
quality control over the issue, and I have no reason to suspect
other companies are not just as anal about it.

Conclusion

I hope the above clears up any fears or confusion regarding
questions people may have had regarding whey. Considering how
much research is out there on whey and its many positive effects
on such a wide range of things, such as immunity, possibly
preventing some cancers, improving performance, etc., I know
whey will remain a staple part of my diet for many years to
come. It’s off to blend up some whey for me!

Exercise Walking For Seniors: Preventing Foot Problems

The Healthy Way

Exercise has a very important role in the general health and
the quality of life of everyone, but especially in seniors.
Seniors who walk tend to look younger, sleep more soundly
and have fewer visits to the doctor. Walking for 30 to 60
minutes four to six days a week will help improve
osteoarthritis and decrease the risk of osteoporosis, heart
disease, hypertension, diabetes and obesity. Walking is the
top recreational sport for seniors.

Although many seniors may be scared to start an exercise
program because they are worried about injury, the health
benefits of exercise outweigh the risk of injury. Walking is
considered one of the best forms of exercise because it’s
safe, cheap and easy. Unfortunately, foot problems can
prevent seniors from starting or continuing with a walking
program. Follow these tips to help avoid foot problems
when walking:

1. Choose the right shoe. Make sure the shoe is supportive
and bends only at the toes. The shoe should also be stable
from side to side. If you can twist the shoe or fold it in half, it
is too flexible. The shoe should have enough wiggle room
for the toes, yet be snug enough to keep the heel from
slipping.

2. Buy shoes in the afternoon. Feet swell during the day and
it is better to fit your shoes at this time. The only exception to
this rule would be if you always do your walks in the
mornings. Make sure your foot is measured at the store to
obtain your correct size. Feet change size over time. Most
feet lengthen and widen over the years, increasing the shoe
size. Don’t assume you’ve always been the same shoe size.

3. Start slowly with an easy pace. Try a short walk of 15
minutes and gradually increase the time each day.

4. If you haven’t walked before, make sure you start on a flat,
soft surface. A great surface to start on is a level, dirt path.
Don’t jump into climbing hills until you build some
endurance.

5. Warm up before walks. Gentle stretching before and after
walking can improve circulation and prevent injury. But, don’t
over stretch. If you haven’t stretched before, be careful not to
over do it. This can lead to injury.

6. Avoid walking in bad weather. Cold, wet weather makes
surfaces slippery and hard and decreases visibility.
Muscles can become tight and the feet can become numb,
increasing the chance of injury.

7. Examine your feet after the walk. Look for areas of
irritation, red spots, blisters or areas of swelling. Self-
treating can turn a minor problem into a major problem.
Consult a podiatrist if a problem persists.

8. Avoid cotton socks. The white cotton socks you’ve been
told to wear all these years are not appropriate for exercise
walking. Synthetic or wool socks will help wick moisture
away from your feet as you walk. This will decrease your
chance of fungal infections, excess rubbing or blister
formation.

9. Walk in well-lit places. The darker the trail or road, the
more difficult it is to see and the higher the chance you will
have of tripping, falling or twisting an ankle.

10. Don’t walk through pain. As soon as you notice a foot
problem, stop walking. If you continue walking with an injury
you could be making the problem worse. If you feel it’s
necessary to continue your exercise program, try using a
stationary bike while you give your foot a rest. If a few days of
rest does not resolve the problem, see a podiatrist.

Know Your Enemy: What is Colon Cancer?

The Healthy Way

The word cancer always brings worries to anyone who hears it. In
most cases, people never realize they have cancer, not until the
feel some kind of pain and have it checked out, only to find out
that they already have it. Especially nowadays, with the kind
lifestyle that is being imposed upon us, news and studies tell
us that we can get it from the foods we eat, the air we breathe
and virtually almost anywhere.

We cannot know when or why colon cancer might strike us, but we
can certainly take specific measures to significantly lessen the
chances of getting colon cancer. But first, we have to arm
ourselves with information. What is colon cancer? How would you
know if you have it?

Have you had, or do you know of any one who might be
experiencing change in their bowel movement, blood in their
stool (scientifically referred to as melena, hematochezia) or
bowel obstruction? These are some of the more obvious symptoms
of colon cancer, but it is possible for the symptoms to be less
specific. Things like abnormal weight loss, anemia, that occurs
with symptoms like fatigue, pallor and lasting discomfort are
also possible signs. If upon check-up, there is liver’s
enlargement (or hepatomegaly), this could be due to the tumor
spreading.

Like a lot of cancer cases, there are also ocassions where no
symptoms are present at all. Moreover, it is highly recommended
to get check-ups for the disease from time to time.

Colon cancer, more scientifically, colorectal cancer or bowel
cancer, is characterized by harmful growths in the colon or
large bowel, rectum and appendix. Many think that cancers come
from the formation of polyps in the colon. These polyps are
commonly non-threatening, but some might progress into colon
cancer over time. Colon cancer is now the third among most usual
form of cancer and the second leading cause of death among
cancers in the Western world.

Like we mentioned earlier, diet also plays a huge role. Studies
show that if a person’s usually consists of red meat, and is low
on fresh fruit, vegetables, poultry and fish invites the risk
for colon cancer. A study done by the European Prospective
Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition in June 2005 suggested
that a diet high on red and processed meat and low on fiber, are
associated with an increased risk of colon cancer. People who
preferred fish showed a decreased risk. However, the relation
between dietary fiber and risk of colon cancer remains
controversial as other studies have cast doubt on claims that
high fiber intake can decrease the risk of colon cancer.

The risk of developing colon cancer also increases with age.
People in their 60s and 70s are more suceptible, while cases
before age 50 are uncommon unless there is a history of colon
cancer in the family.

In women, usually those who’ve had cancer of the ovary, uterus,
or breast are at higher risk of developing colon cancer.

Smokers and physically inactive people are also more likely to
develop of colon cancer.

How do you know if you have it? There are may ways of diagnosing
for colon cancer, like a digital rectal exam or a PET (Positron
Emission Tomography) scan. One sure way is through a
colonoscopy. In a colonoscopy, a lighted probe called a
colonoscope is inserted into the rectum and the entire colon to
inspect for polyps and other abnormalities that may be caused by
cancer.

If polyps are found during the colonoscopy, they can be
immediately removed. Tissue samples can also be taken for
biopsy. Therapy is usually done through surgery, with many cases
also requires chemotherapy.

Diet For Aching Joints

The Healthy Way

Chronic illnesses like arthritis, are often linked to dietary practices. Researches show that certain food can start arthritic pain. But on the positive side, recent studies also show that some food can alleviate pain caused by arthritis. However, it must be clarified that far from being cures, these offer only temporary relief or act as preventive measures.

Teas are known detoxifiers and cleansers. But did you know that they also minimize inflammatory signals that cause arthritic pain? It is actually advised by doctors to persons who suffer from arthritis to drink more tea. Moreover, all teas made from tea leaves have the same effect. This means that it doesn’t matter if you prefer black tea over green tea. Another drink which have high anti-inflammatory agents is red wine or other grape-based wine. Snacking on fresh grapes is also advised since these agents are actually found on grape skins.

Vegetables are also known to restrict transmissions of pain signals. Experts even advocate the removal of animal products from your diet to reduce pain and inflammation due to arthritis. Broccoli has glutathione, an efficient detoxifier and antioxidant. Researches show that people with lower glutathione levels are more prone to arthritis than people with higher levels. It’s not a problem if you don’t like brocolli; cauliflower, tomatoes, asparagus, potatoes, and cabbages also have high levels of glutathione. If you are a fruit person, this agent is found in watermelon, grapefruit, peaches, oranges, and avocados. Speaking of fruits, pineapples also contain anti-inflammatory agents and are known minimize swellings.

Containing large amounts of fatty acids like omega-3, fish had also made its mark as an anti-inflammatory agent. Researchers found that consuming more fish actually reduced risks of developing arthritis in women. Omega-3 in fish limit the inflammatory agent production. Fish diets composed of tuna, mackerel, herring, and other oily fish are recommended. Fish oils supplements are even prescribed for people who suffer from severe arthritis. Another source of good fatty acids is olive oil. Experts recommend cooking vegetables in olive oil. They found out that compared to raw veggies, those cooked in olive oil actually produce more anti-inflammatory agents. Another health food that reduces pain caused by arthritis is soy or soy beans. What’s more, it’s an excellent substitute for protein.

Maintain a diet abundant in the above-mentioned foods and minimize the discomfort of having arthritis. Don’t have arthritis? Start this diet just the same and lower the odds of having it. After all, no one wants to grow old with aching joints.
