The sequencing of the human genome begun in 1990 and took 13
years to complete.Nowadays, DNA sequencing project are more
widespread and new methods for sequencing the DNA were
discovered.
But first, what is DNA sequencing?
Well, DNA sequencing means determining what nucleotide order a
given DNA fragment has, or determining the exact sequence of
nucleotides in a given sample of DNA.
A sequence of DNA is a ‘blueprint’ for the body because it
contains all the information related to that species, and DNA
sequencing is trying to discover all the information hidden
inside DNA, information which can have many medical and
biological uses, especially at curing genetic and contagious
diseases and other researches.
Most of the DNA sequencing is currently performed using the
chain termination method, but scientists are in the search for
new methods that can save time. For example, a method that is 100
times faster than the old ones was recently discovered. It it
called the novel sequencing technique and it uses extremely tiny
fiber-optic reaction vessels, which make the sequencing of
hundreds of thousands of DNA molecules at once possible, unlike
the current methods which can only sequence short lengths of DNA
at a time.
Another new DNA sequencing technique which promises both faster
time and lower costs uses colors and lasers - the researchers
dyed each of the four blocks of DNA with different colors
A DNA sequencing method which is available for everyone is
pyrosequencing, but it can lead to a few errors.
Other DNA sequencing methods are Nanoporesequencing, or
Sequencing by hibridization.
Until now the genomes of some small bacteria and viruses, have
been sequenced and the genomes of other larger species and
plants, and of course the human genome.
It is hoped that a few more years later the costs of DNA
sequencing for one person will seriously lower, the medicine
will become more personalized, and it will be much easier to
fight diseases.

Who hasn’t bolted upright in the night, awakened by a sudden and
terrible burning sensation in the pit of their stomach? Whether
you indulged in some overly spicy chili, or overdid it on those
late-night leftovers, these quick heartburn remedies will soothe
your fiery stomach and help you get back to sleep!
1. The first thing you’ll want to do when you’re awakened by
heartburn pain, is to stand up. This helps keep the acid at bay
while you go and get a full glass of cool water.
2. Drink the whole glass of water, and follow it with a mixture
of 1 tablespoon of baking soda, and half a glass of water. Be
careful though, if you have high blood pressure or are pregnant,
this can cause water retention or increase your blood pressure.
3. DON’T drink milk or suck on mints to relieve heartburn. Milk
might feel nice and cool going down, but it actually contains
fats and proteins that cause your stomach to secrete MORE acid
and make your heartburn worse! Mints, while they may feel
soothing, actually relax the small valve between your esophagus
and stomach, whose purpose it is to actually KEEP acid at bay!
When this valve is relaxed, more acid can seep up and aggravate
heartburn symptoms!
4. This is going to sound strange, but downing a teaspoon of
vinegar can help soothe heartburn immediately! Why give your
stomach MORE acid when it already seems to have enough, you ask?
Sometimes, heartburn is caused as a result of too little acid,
and vinegar helps quell indigestion by giving your stomach a
little extra “juice” (no pun intended!) to do its job!
5. Certain foods can cause nighttime heartburn, including: soda
pop or beverages with caffeine (which you shouldn’t be drinking
before bed anyway!), alcohol, garlic, chocolate (sorry!), citrus
fruits, tomatoes and tomato-based products. Avoiding these types
of food can help ease your indigestion if you frequently find
yourself awakened with that intolerable burning!
6. Eating a banana each day works like an antacid to soothe
heartburn. If you’re already stricken with indigestion, eating
pineapple or papaya (or drinking the juice) can help settle your
stomach naturally. Some people also claim that eating a teaspoon
of mustard (yuck!) can work immediately.
7. Avoid eating at least two hours before you go to sleep. Those
late night snacks can keep your stomach busy all night and
prevent you from easing into a deep, restful sleep. You may also
find that sleeping on your left side or sleeping at a somewhat
upright angle can keep acid down where it belongs.
If you are awakened by heartburn on a regular basis, or the pain
is severe, or if you have heartburn with vomiting, you’ll want
to consult your doctor immediately as it may be a sign of a more
serious condition such as an ulcer. Above all, avoid spicy,
fatty and caffeine-containing foods before bed, and you should
be able to drift off to sleep easily.
Sweet dreams!

Two of the biggest obstacles you will need to overcome when
trying to cure your acne is removing toxins from your blood and
decreasing your bodies water retention.
Both of these can be achieved with juicing.
You get acne when your pores get blocked. Bacterial, oil, dead
skin cells and toxins get trapped inside the blocked pores which
cause an inflammatory response which gives you red, raised acne.
Excess toxins in the body and water retention both can cause
your pores to be clogged up. One of the safest, natural and most
effective ways to deal with these problems are with fresh fruit
and vegetable juices.
Juicing is extracting the vital vitamins, minerals, amino acids
and enzymes of fruit and vegetables and discarding the fibre. By
removing fibre, the juice is able to be quickly absorbed into
the body and be put to maximum use in the body.
When you eat whole fruit and vegetables, it can take up to
several hours of digestion before beneficial nutrients enter the
bloodstream. Alot of the enzymes and other nutrients are also
used up or destroyed by digestion. Juicing maximises nutrient
uptake and maximises the health effect.
The first juices we will take a look at are juices that are good
for cleaning the body, blood and lymph of toxins. Large amounts
of toxins in the body is known as toxemia. Toxemia is poisoning
of the body by over retention of body waste or from the the
by-products of metabolism or digestion.
The main vegetable juice many consider the “master juice” that
can be used as a base for any combination of vegetable juices is
carrot juice. It should be noted at this point that vegetable
and fruit juices should not be mixed and should be taken a
minimum of an hour apart.
Carrot juice is an excellent blood cleanser and helps to clear
and beautify the skin. Being an alkalizer, it helps to clear
acidic conditions in the body. One of the toxic conditions that
cause acne is known as acidosis. Acidosis is simply, an excess
of acid in the body tissue and in the blood. One of the symptoms
of acidosis is when the body tries to eliminate impurities
through the skin which we saw earlier, was a cause of acne.
Cucumber juice is known as a natural diuretic. It also assists
carrot juice in expulsing of toxins, salt, and excess water.
When your water tension is released, the pressure on the skin
cells is also released which was causing pressure on your pores
and making them close up.
Together, carrot and cucumber juice mixed and drunk several
times a day are an excellent weapon against acne.

A Walk with Your Dog
By George Barnett
You have
decided to start a fitness routine that involves both you and
your dog. That’s great! And it’s great for both you and your dog
as you will both benefit from the walk, the fresh air, the
exercise, and the opportunity to poop in the neighbor’s yard.
Well, okay, maybe that last one should be limited to the dog,
but it does bring up an important point when you are walking
with your dog. That is, your dog has a different agenda on the
walk than you do.
You want to walk to lose weight,
lower your cholesterol, improve your circulation or any number
of other reasons that all have to do with your health. These are
all good reasons for getting off the couch and walking. Your dog
will share your enthusiasm for the walk. When you go though your
routine of getting ready for the walk, your dog will become more
excited and animated in anticipation of a walk with you. But for
entirely different reasons.
As you leave your home for
your walk your dog will be pulling on his leash, anxious to get
into the neighborhood. His tail will be held high, which means
something to the dog, and it is very possible that his nose will
be scanning the ground as you walk. The dog’s nose is a very
sensitive organ and we humans have learned to put the dog’s nose
to work for us. Humans have yet to build a machine that is half
as sensitive as a dog’s nose. Your dog is just a family pet, not
trained to hunt for criminals or lost skiers. Nevertheless, he
still has that nose and he wants to put it to good use. Your
walk is his opportunity to do that.
You may notice that
some dogs take their duties, as dogs, more seriously than
others. A dog from a working breed may give some passing
attention to the various scents that fill the air near ground
level. For a dog like this it is more in the nature of reading
the morning paper. A dog from a hunting breed, on the other
hand, will study a scent in great detail. For this kind of dog
it is more in the nature of a technical journal that must be
scrupulously examined and analyzed. There is far more
information in the scent that your dog is sniffing at that we,
as humans, will ever know.
What this means to you is
that a walk with your dog will not be undertaken at a consistent
speed or pace and may involve numerous stops, especially in
those areas where other dogs are known to pass. This is where
your agenda will be different from your dog’s. Using an
extending leash can help to reduce the disparity between your
pace and your dog’s.
But this is not a bad thing.
Walking your dog is still good exercise. In fact,

COLOR="#0000DD">studies indicate that even
moderate exercise, like you might get by walking with your dog,
can significantly reduce a man’s risk of heart attack and the
benefit is even greater for a woman. In addition, your dog will
prove to be a great motivator. Dog’s are creatures of habit and
when your dog starts walking with you he will quickly develop
that habit. On those days when you just don’t feel like walking,
your dog will, and he will let you know that, no matter how you
feel, he still wants to go for that walk.
So, before
you start a new exercise routine go talk to your doctor. Then
talk to your dog. Everyone will agree that a daily walk will be
a good thing to pursue.
One last thing. Another habit
to build, besides the walk itself, is to take one of those
plastic grocery bags with you on your walk. Your dog will not
have any inhibitions about defecating in your neighbor’s lawn.
“When ya gotta go, ya gotta go.” Should you dog do something
indiscreet clean it up using the plastic grocery bag and maybe a
garden trowel. That is what a good neighbor does as well as a
responsible dog owner.
Enjoy your walk! Your heart, and
your dog, will thank you.

Alzheimer’s disease is named after the German psychologist Alois Alzheimer’s. Whilst it is presented as a twentieth century disease, the brain degeneration, cognitive impairment and disturbing behavioral and psychiatric problems which characterize the disease have most likely been around for centuries.
While Dr. Alzheimer’s is the disease’s namesake, Alzheimer’s colleague Emil Kraepelin played an equally important role in the identification of the disease. Kraepelin isolated and grouped together the symptoms of the disorder, suggesting they were a unique disease process, while Alzheimer was the first to understand what was actually happening in the brains of Alzheimer’s patients. He discovered unusual plaques and tangles in the brain of one of his patients, a fifty year old woman, who exhibited the symptoms of the disorder identified by Kraepelin.
After Kraepelin and Alzheimer’s identification of the disease in the early twentieth century, Alzheimer’s disease history shows that not many advances were made in understanding or treating the disease. This could have been due to the fact that the disease could only be diagnosed after a patient’s death: at the autopsy, until the end of the twentieth century.
Initially, the disease was diagnosed in patients between the ages of 45 and 65 and labeled as “presenile dementia.” The name Alzheimer’s disease only gained popularity in the 70s and 80s as a label for patients over the age of 65. Now the disease has recognizable and diagnosable symptoms, which can appear in patients as young as 30. Typically, an aggressive type of Alzheimer’s disease that occurs in patients under the age of 65 has a known genetic factor, while the appearance of the disease in patients over 65 has a number of other factors in regards to its development, such as health, occupation, and environment.
Recent advances in science and technology have led to a promising new era in Alzheimer’s disease history. Cognex, the first FDA-approved drug used to slow the disease process, hit the markets in 1990, and three others soon followed. The medications slow-down the cognitive impairment in patients with mild to moderate Alzheimer’s disease by boosting depleted levels of acetylcholine in the brain. These are crucial to the healthy functioning of neurons.
Other research is being done on ways to prevent Alzheimer’s from developing further, and even preventing its onset. Certain hormones such as estrogen and anti-inflammatory drugs such as aspirin have been found to have a mediating effect, and environmental factors, such as mentally demanding occupations, dance, and chess have been found to decrease older people’s chances of developing Alzheimer’s. Even something as simple as wearing a seatbelt or helmet could be crucial to preventing Alzheimer’s disease.
Early detection techniques are being honed to improve treatment of the disease. For example, genetic research has discovered genetic markers for Familial (as in coming from the family: genetic) Alzheimer’s disease as well as non-familial Alzheimer’s. In addition, advanced technology, such as MRIs and PET scans, are being used to detect structural changes in the brain that may indicate the development of Alzheimer’s disease before symptoms even begin. As the Baby Boomer generation begins to age, scientists fear the strain a large number of dementia patients could place upon the healthcare and social welfare systems; therefore, researchers are scrambling to make Alzheimer’s disease history.

Maybe it’s the thought of mowing the grass, shoveling the snow, or the kitchen faucet that needs to be repaired. The multitude of responsibilities and maintenance involved in keeping up your current home may make the move to an Independent Living Community look very attractive. But is it affordable?
This is a question we hear a lot. In most communities utilities, maintenance, some laundry, and some meals are included in the fee. Use the monthly fee to compare to costs of staying in your current living situation. Remember to include utilities, taxes, insurance, fees paid for the yard work, and maintenance of your home. There should be a staff member available, at the facility you are considering, who can go over financial information with you.
If you are considering moving into a Continuum of Care Retirement Community as opposed to a stand alone Independent Retirement Community, there may be entrance fees or life care contracts to consider. According to the Continuing Care Accreditation Commission, there are three basic types of contract that a resident enters into with a CCRC: extensive, modified, and fee-for-service. An extensive contract offers unlimited long-term nursing care for little or no substantial increase in your usual monthly payments. Entrance fees and monthly costs under extensive contracts are typically higher than those under modified or fee-for-service contracts. That entrance fee may be refundable over time, partially refundable or nonrefundable. You may acquire ownership of your residence within the community, or you may be provide housing on a rental basis.
A modified continuing care contract includes a specified amount of long-term nursing care beyond which you are responsible for payment. Once such specified amount of care is reached, the resident may continue to receive care, but most pay the facility’s daily or monthly nursing rate.
A fee-for-service continuing care contract covers the cost of your housing, residential services, and amenities. You pay full daily rates for all long-term nursing care required. Entrance and monthly fees are lower under this type of contract because residents are responsible for all long-term nursing and health care costs.
There are many options available under the general term “CCRC”. Your best course of action is to visit several communities and to decide which community offers the best combination of services, amenities and contract options for your or your loved one’s particular needs and desires.
Let’s look at an example to help illustrate how even someone who didn’t THINK they could afford an Independent Retirement Community, really can!
Jane is a healthy 70 year old who wanted to enjoy the rest of her retirement years without the hassle of home maintenance, yard work, and home repairs. Plus, her home was built 40 years ago, and wasn’t particularly “senior” friendly! Doorways were narrow, the laundry room was in the basement, and the stairs to that area were narrow. She didn’t want to risk falling.
Jane didn’t think she could afford to live in an Independent Retirement Community, but after visiting her friend Marge several times, she knew it was a vibrant and active place that really catered to her lifestyle.
Jane also wanted to leave an inheritance to her children, but didn’t have a large 401K or IRA to leave behind, therefore, all she had was the value of her home. She was worried that if she sold her home and moved to an Independent Retirement Community, she would not be able to leave an inheritance. Her children on the other hand, were not worried about receiving an inheritance, they just wanted Jane to live the life that made her happy, safe, and comfortable.
After sitting down with the staff at her local Independent Retirement Community, she understood that not only could she afford to live there, but she would also be able to leave a LARGER inheritance to her children than she ever thought possible.
Here’s how it worked for Jane:
Jane’s Current Assets:
• $100,000 - total in checking/savings, CDs, stocks, bonds, mutual funds, IRA and annuities (rainy day money)
• $150,000 – value of her home
• $1400/ month Social Security Income and Pension
Cost to Live in the Independent Retirement Community:
• $2300/ month, no entrance fee, just monthly rent
• -$1400/month income
• = shortfall of $900/month for Jane
Jane’s Solution:
• Jane sold her home for $150,000 and put the proceeds into a lifetime annuity that generated an income of $1,204 per month. (which covers her shortfall of $900 and leaves $300 for other needs)
• Jane took her remaining assets (rainy day money) of $100,000 and left $25,000 in checking, but purchased a single premium life insurance policy for $75,000.
• That single premium life insurance policy is worth $250,000 TAX FREE to her heirs upon her death.
• Plus if she passed away within 10 years, her heirs could also possibly receive the remaining lifetime annuity payout.
• Remember this is simply an example and not a guarantee of results. Everyone needs to have their own person financial analysis completed.
Jane can now move into her Independent Retirement Community and live a safe, stress free life. Her children will receive the inheritance she always wanted them to have. Can you afford to live in an Independent Retirement Community? Chances are that with the right financial planning, you can live the retirement you always dreamed of. If you hate fussing over your contacts every morning there are
two solutions - extended 30-day wear contact lenses and daily
disposable lenses. But which is best?
Using lenses that you can wear for 30 days straight is very
convenient. Unfortunately it is not safe. Accumulated dust
particles and a month’s worth of protein deposits on the lenses
put you at risk of infection, even if you wear highest quality
extended wear lenses. Daily disposable contacts, on the other
hand, are not only convenient but a healthy option.
Advantages of daily disposable lenses
To make your eyes feel comfortable and to reduce the risk of eye
infection, you should replace your contacts often. And from this
point of view daily disposable contacts give you the most
benefits:
- Dailies present the lowest risk of infection - a lens
fresh from its package is sterile
- There is not enough
time for protein and calcium to build up on your contacts (which
happens with other types of lenses, in spite of cleaning
solutions). As a result, people wearing daily disposable lenses
report clearer vision and more comfort.
- There is no
fuss with cleaning - just open the pack and put your contacts
in. If you feel that rubbing your lenses before and after wear
is too much work, daily disposables are definitely for you.
Also, there is no need for cleaning and storage products
- Daily disposables are ideal for people who suffer from
allergies, especially during peak allergy seasons
- They
are great for people who wear contacts only a few days a week.
Lenses left in their case collect bacteria. Also, if you only
wear contact lenses 2-3 days a week, daily disposables are a
cheaper option.
- And, of course, if you rip or lose your
lens, it’s no big deal - just throw it away and open another
pack. Disposables are also ideal for traveling.
See reviews of best daily disposable contacts
Disadvantages of daily disposable lenses
There are no health disadvantages to daily disposable contact
lenses. Their only draw-back is the cost - especially if you
have an astigmatism and need toric disposable contact lenses.
And, of course, you will have to put them in every morning and
take them out at night.
How expensive are daily disposable contacts?
You probably know that a monthly supply of daily disposable
lenses will cost you more that than a pair of monthly
disposables. However, contact lens manufacturers constantly work
to decrease the production costs of lenses, so the prices
gradually go down.
If you compare the cost of Acuvue 1 Day and Acuvue 2 (popular
daily and 2-week disposable contact lenses), dailies would cost
you about twice as much, from most retailers. However, bear in
mind that while wearing daily disposable contact lenses, you
don’t need to buy storing and cleaning solutions. Also, if you
wear contact lenses only 3 or 4 times a week, the cost would be
even less.
To save on your contacts, buy them online. And for even greater
savings, order a full year’s supply of lenses. Many Internet
shops give you additional discounts for a full year supply or a
substantial rebate off your next purchase.
If you are currently prescribed annual replacement or monthly
disposable lenses, ask your doctor if he or she can switch you
to daily disposables. The health of your eyes is very important,
and you will appreciate the difference disposable lenses can
make.

Roche Tamiflu- Complete Anti Viral Drug Information
Tamiflu (oseltamivir
phosphate), the miracle drug created by Roche
Pharmaceuticals has lately been approved by the Food and Drug
Administration U.S.A as a cure for Influenza. It has been
accepted as a treatment of both A and B types of Flu. Although
the FDA has warned that Tamiflu Drug is not a substitute for the
annual flu vaccine.
Working of Tamiflu-The drug is a neuraminidase inhibitor.
These inhibitors treat the cause of influenza infection by
inhibiting the critical neuraminidase protein on the surface of
the virus. As the flu multiplies, neuraminidase enables it to
move on and infect other host cells (left). When you inhibit
neuraminidase (right), the flu can’t escape from its host cell,
which prevents it from spreading. TAMIFLU treats flu at its
source by attacking the virus that causes the flu, rather than
simply masking symptoms.
Who should consider taking TAMIFLU?
Patients aged 1 year and older who have flu
symptoms that appeared within the previous day or two.
Typical symptoms of flu include sudden onset of fever and
chills, cough, muscle pain, headache, fatigue and weakness. Some
people also get a stuffy nose and sore throat.
Who should not take TAMIFLU?
You should not take TAMIFLU if you are allergic to oseltamivir
phosphate or any other ingredients of TAMIFLU. Before starting
treatment, make sure your doctor knows if you are taking any
other medication or have any type of kidney disease.
Common Side Effects of Tamiflu- include nausea,
vomiting, headache, and fatigue. Vomiting was reported more
often among children who received a twice-daily dose of the drug
than among those given Tamiflu once a day. The most common side
effects are nausea and vomiting. Taking TAMIFLU with food may
reduce the potential of these side effects. If you notice any
side effects not mentioned - or if you have any concerns about
the side effects you are experiencing, please inform your
healthcare professional.
Dosage & Storage
TAMIFLU should be taken twice daily (once in the morning and
once in the evening) for five days. TAMIFLU can be taken with or
without food. You should complete the entire treatment of ten
capsules, even if you are feeling better. Never share TAMIFLU
with anyone, even if they have the same symptoms. It is
important that you begin your treatment with TAMIFLU as soon as
possible from the first appearance of your flu symptoms.
TAMIFLU capsules should
be stored at room temperature below 77°F (25°C) and kept
in a dry place. Keep this medication out of the reach of
children.
Apart from taking tamiflu dosage, one should careful while
maintaining proper hygiene like wash your hands frequently, and
avoid situations such as sharing cups and utensils that can
spread the virus to others. All these efforts will cumulatively
promote to a healthier environment.

There has been much advancement in the field of wheelchairs, specifically mobility wheelchairs. But now there is something even more versatile, mobility electric scooters. When it comes to the elderly or handicapped mobility scooters may be the best thing since sliced bread.
In the past disabled persons would lose out on many uplifting activities. But with the innovations in mobility scooters, the elderly and handicapped are not feeling quite as old or as feeble as they once were. Why? When you can get around almost as well as active healthy people you can return to being a part of the family or community. Independence is once again your ally. The ability to get around the house or out in public once again can be a major boost in a persons self worth. No more dependence on others to perform common everyday tasks.
Motorized electric scooters for people with a handicap are fast becoming the way of the future. With technological advances being made with regard to electric mobility scooters it’s no wonder they have taken the disabled world by storm. It’s a thrill seeing a 90 year old man walking his dog with the help of a mobility electric scooter, something that he wouldn’t have been possible just a few short years ago. But now there is practically nowhere a person can’t go with the help of an electric motor scooter.
There are gas motor scooters and electric motorized scooters, but for the handicapped gas scooters are out and electric is in. No need for gas, just plug it in for a recharge and then off you go with full independence once again. These wonderful scooters are getting faster and lighter. Plus, the scooter batteries have drastically improved, allowing much longer periods of driving without the need for a recharge. Wouldn’t it be nice being able to scoot around all day without the need for a charge?
Another advantage of mobility electric motor scooters is the cost. They are not only becoming increasingly less expensive, but if a person is disabled or handicapped it may even be possible to have Medicare or other medical insurance pick up some or all of the tab.
When purchasing an electric scooter be sure to take it for a test drive before buying. The most important thing is making sure that your motorized scooter is comfortable. By purchasing a comfortable scooter it’ll be a pleasant drive anywhere you go. Another consideration is the cost. If at all possible have your health insurance company pay for part of the price. But even if you have no insurance it is well worth the price. No price can be put on being independent and mobile, especially if you’ve been laid up for awhile.
One of the many options available in mobile electric scooters is their number of wheels. There are models that have either 3 wheels or 4 wheels. The 3 wheel scooters are typically lighter in weight. The 4 wheel models are typically heavier, but may be a little better balanced when going quickly around a turn. Two wheels in the front make for a more stable vehicle around sharp corners. Once again, it is wise to test drive before buying.
There are many different options including colors, sizes, weights, number of wheels, battery capacity and the types of seats. If chosen carefully an electric scooter can become one of the best purchases ever made for the handicapped, disabled or elderly.
Sally Johnson writes about many topics. Spreading the word about the wonderful world of mobility electric scooters is one of her missions. For more information about mobility electric scooters please visit her site.
